Ok. Ok. I know that there are not many people here who likes ambient and/or shoegaze music, but anyway here is the thread to talk about interesting ambient music and classic or new ambient records. That's a way for me to let you discover beautiful music. Because the best music is often beautiful music, right?

i'm pretty sure the other m83 releases can be considered shoegaze. digital shades is more ambient, but that doesn't make the other releases any less of shoegaze albums. their second album definitely references loveless.

Thanks for starting this topic, egg! I've recently gained interest in ambient electronic music and am looking for more. Lately, I've been checking out Fennesz, Stars of the Lid, and Tim Hecker. What are some other great ambient albums I can look into?

P.S. I'm looking into some of the albums listed at the top once I get more emusic downloads.

I think you should start with: Belong - October Language. A sad ambient/shoegaze album with a lot of distortion. Their new album is Colorloss.

Shoegaze is different than ambient (shoegaze more droning guitar work) but noticed it creeping into more ambient-type albums ala the forementioned M83...


my fav showgaze albums (most with vocal), back in the day were:

Ride - Going Blank Again (1992) stand out track Leave them All Behind

Catherine Wheel - Ferment (1992) 'Black Metallic' is a classic

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (1991)

also early Swervedriver and for more ambient+shoegaze check out ALL of the Cocteau Twins stuff!!

I'm a shoegaze fan and definitely proud of it. I would also recommend Asobi Seksu "Citrus" on the more pure shoegaze front, and on the darker side of things A Place to Bury Strangers, Joy Division, and Jesus and Mary Chain. I think the best new shoegaze album lately is Alcest's "Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde", which is a sort of French take on the genre.

Also, this may not be most people's cup o' tea, but I'm a big fan of the shoegaze-influenced black metal scene, which I think dates back to Burzum around the same time that My Bloody Valentine was doing its thing. Other recent entries in the shoegaze-black-metal genre include mostly one-man bands, such as Xasthur, Wrath of the Weak, Striborg, and Leviathan. There are plenty others. Like I said above, it's not for everyone, but it may surprise you. If you really love My Bloody Valentine, at least, give Burzum a try.

no one has mentioned slowdive so far, but i would highly recommend "pygmalion" and "souvlaki".

also, i don't think joy division fits the shoegaze genre at all.

the label kranky has a lot of good shoegaze / ambient music.

those are bit 'poppy'

there was a really cool band i found online named paavoharju. very interesting album w/ great atmosphere

i d also add that ambient has soo many sub categories like techno, dub, industrial, house
the new burial album i would say combines some great ambient w/ some great beats. might also throw aphex twin in there. 85-92, i d say is an ambient album.

william basinski is an absolute wonder and a fav of mine. highly recommend his work...i started with the disintegration loops he did.

Their album Escame the Photon Band has got to be one of my favorite shoegaze albums, and it saw the most rotation in and out of my cd player last fall.

Stars of the Lid is more drone than anything else. I guess they're ambient, but they're far more drone.

this topic is perfect timing. i was in a Loveless and Deerhunter/Atlas Sound binge lately and wanting more in the genre. i'm gonna check out a bunch of these. thanx

Mmmm. Deerhunter. Atlas Sounds' LP was great, but not Deerhunter great. Cryptograms kicks my ass.

There's a band called Klimt that is releasing an album this year called Jesienne Odcienie Melancholii. I'm listening to it right now, and it sounds awesome. Ambient/shoegaze describes it perfectly. Definitely recommended.
