This is slowly becoming more popular and there really isn't a better forum for it, although it isn't defined by any genre.

The first mash-up I ever heard was about 10 years ago. Orbital put a live version of their song Halcyon on a disc and it was amazing. In the middle of the song, they just break down and mash up Linda Ronstadt's "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" and Bon Jovi's "Shot Through the Heart". It was beautiful. They flow together perfectly. I was hooked.

More recently, I'm sure most of you heard about DJ Danger Mouse mixing Jay-Z's The Black Album with the Beatles White Album. That is one amazing disc. And then of course, Party Ben does "Boulevard of Broken Songs", mixing Green Day and Oasis perfectly, as well as Travis and Aerosmith/Eminem. Great tune download it here if you haven't heard it. (That is the actual mp3, so you need to right click the link and choose "save as").

If you ever want to hear some great, some not so great and some just fun mash-ups, listen to the SIXX MIXX. You can find tons of their mixes on Party Ben's site here

Anyone else know of any good Mash Ups?

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back.

I am sorry but mash-ups are lame.It is a half assed way of getting some kind of name by doing absolutely nothing.Any dj will tell you that mixing 2 songs is not a diffacult task.About 3-4 years ago it hit its peak. Now every bedroom dj and musician has some kind of half-assed mash-up.It has been going on for a long time...hip-hops djs used to blend 2 songs one accapella and instrumental on top of one another.
The problem is that there are a few decent people doing it and a shitload of people who should nto be doing it.
I was into it for a while, but now I only ebjoy it in the context of the "mix".Hearing a single mash-up alone does nothing for me...but when i hear a uniqe fun mash-up in the context of a mix it is ok.

Green Day and oasis, who cares??

I hate mash-ups solely for the fact that 99% of the time they are not unique and boring. Most of the time I am like, those sounde dlike they could have worked together anyways.Whats the need to put them together.

Take 2 polar opposites and try to mash them cohesively and you ahve an interesting challenge.

If i get around to it i willt ry to get some links to some good mashes.

Wow Imprezu, thanks for the post...JERK! Just kidding man.

Well hey, I enjoy them. Agreed that it isn't that difficult but they are still fun.

And the polar opposites? That's why I love DJ Danger Mouse's Gray Album. You can't get any more opposite than Jay-Z and the Beatles.

I'm not a big fan (nor an enemy) of mash-ups. I think they're usually pretty cool on first listen, when you're trying to anticipate the changes, but then they get old. I liked that Green Day/Oasis one the first coupla times I heard it...but then it started to lose its cleverness.

But I usually like them on first listen...if they're good. I HATE that Gwen Stefani song, but hearing it mixed with the Clash made it tolerable. But others I can't recall were just...well...boring.

heck...they're fun...sometimes a waste of time and pointless("hey...I bet I could mix these two songs together and it'll sound AWESOME!!!")

I prefer real mash-ups where real Dj's take a song and make it unidentifiable, tranced and drum'n'cut up kinda stripped down and blown up kinda mixes...

Speaking of beatles mash ups, theres a great great cd done of them by djbc called Meet The Beastlies. As you can probably guess its a series of beatles and beastie boys mash ups. You can get it online for free at this site, check out the rest of his stuff like Let's Love Together, its a pete rock and al green mash up. DJBC is probably the king of mash ups as of now.

k, check this out as a mash up, seeing as though Kraftwerk are a bit of a hot topic with the live album and all:

Take the We Are the Robots version from the 1991 The Mix album, and beat match it with the brilliant Senor Coconut latin version.

Same key, same structure and they even keep time! It's like a latino band jamming along in an acid house club...

That's my contribution.

I knew this was going to bring out random posters who want to link to their "mash up".

I am not going to check out the link.I can already picture it in my head, and it is scary.

I do love senor coconut though!!!
So if you are using his stuff, that is cool!

no no the link is not to that mash up at all.

I haven't recorded it, I just played it with a couple of turntables once and had my friends in stitches.

Sheesh!

I hate the idea of being a shamelessly self-promoting non-musician poseur.
