This seals the deal. I'm getting this ASAP.

I don't particulary like the 80s and i LOVE this album, so you'll probably sleep with the record during this spring.

In General, I don't particularly like the "80's sound" either.

But I do think it suits this album well.

I recently played "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts", it had been a while since I've listened to it.

And I can't say "Saturdays=Youth" is better then "Dead Cities...", But i CAN say it's better than "Before The Dawn Heals Us". But only by a song or two. Cool

It's a shame that Digital Shades volume 1 is not available on CD, only on itunes and vinyl limited edition. I think it could be my fav M83 record

I feel like dead cities, red seas & lost ghosts is vastly superior to saturdays=youth.

The album was really growing on me until about halfway through graveyard girl when the angsty teenage emo poem cuts in, it pretty much killed the song and a lot of the album for me. After listening to the rest of it too, I dunno Dead Cities is just more enjoyable to me.

I just ordered Before the Dawn Heals Us. I liked the bits I heard off Amazon more than the new album, so I figured I would start with that one.

well, i see that most people seem disppointed by the new M83. Personnaly i love it and i think that people should listen more carefully. It's a lot more than a 80s emo-pop record.....anyway.

I agree. I hope noone gets turned off by people (including me) likening it to the sound of the 80's. As eggtweedyegg says, it's alot more then that.

I think more people are put off by the lame emo poem and subject matter than anything.... this album has some cringe-worthy moments that just kill the album.

I love Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts with all my heart. Saturdays=Youth came as a surprise, considering the release of Couleurs gave me hope for a true return to form. While tracks like the aforementioned and Midnight Souls Still Remain are fantastic, I could do without the majority of the record. You Appearing is actually quite nice.

If you're not crazy about it, still do yourself a huge favor and get Dead Cities... its amazing as others have said.

I really love about 2/3 of the new one. The other 3rd is not so good.

True on both counts.

Quite the opposite. I love Before the Dawn.... I'll pick up the others for sure.

What exactly is the "emo poem"? Would someone kindly post the offending lyrics so we can all discuss them objectively without consideration of the accompanying music, scientificallifically? What's the fatal problem with this otherwise great album, can we know? Let's make a thread called "The M83 Strain" and find out what's killing so many music fans.

Well, there's that one song that has the teenage girl saying trite teenage emo things. To me, though, the real problem is the cheesiness of several songs, particularly "Up!" and "We Own the Sky."

here are the lyrics:

Death is her boyfriend
She spits on summers and smiles to the night
She collects crowns made of black roses
But her heart is made of bubble gum

Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl

Dark rags and red stars
She's the dirty witch of her high school
She worships Satan like a father
But dreams of a sister like Molly Ringwald

Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl

(the poem section!)

"I'm gonna jump the walls and run
I wonder if they'll miss me?
I won't miss them.
The cemetery is my home
I want to be a part of it,
Invisible even to the night.
Then I'll read poetry to the stones
Maybe one day I could be one of them.
Wise and silent.
Waiting for someone to love me.
Waiting for someone to kiss me.
I'm fifteen years old
And I feel it's already too late to live.
Don't you?"

Graveyard Girl
Graveyard Girl
Graveyard Girl
Graveyard Girl

I can't help my love
For Graveyard Girl.
I can't help my love
(end)

I have ANY problem with those lyrics. In fact, i love that sentence: "I'm fifteen years old
And I feel it's already too late to live.
Don't you?" EM<3 RuLeZz! XD

I'm fine with the poem until right the Wise and Silent line. then

"Waiting for someone to love me.
Waiting for someone to kiss me.
I'm fifteen years old
And I feel it's already too late to live.
Don't you?"

Its just disgusting, "Waiting for someone to love me/Waiting for someone to kiss me" that line just made me cringe and completely rethink the way I was considering this album. I'm gonna keep listening to Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts, but Saturdays=Youth.. Just isn't kosher in my book.

So you think that a girl who loves you is cheesy? You will reject someone who loves you? ...

Lame emo poem aside, "Graveyard Girl" otherwise is a great tune. But I agree, the poem is excruciating. And if you haven't heard it, just reading the lyrics above don't do it justice.

My other main problems are "Skin of the Night" and "Up!" especially. I actually like "We Own the Sky" a lot. Its got a great dreamy quality to it. And I don't mind the female lyrics during the 2nd half of the song that some of you mentioned as being bad.

I think we are taking the poem a little too seriously. It's all part of the cheesy 80s synth sound-scape, right?
