Hey, I seem to be swaying over to the drum&bass, electronica and dance persuasion... I like original extraordinary music, but it's got to be "listenable" stuff... a cool melody with it would be nice. don't get me wrong nothing over girlie. I'd just like some suggestions of good albums anybody can think of for somebody young, a little bit crazy and interested in new things.
thanks.

You really should narrow your "preferences" down.
Listenable and cool melodies, could encompass 1000's of albums.Especially in the electronic genre.

This is a start.

and another...

Check out those posts and narrow down a few artists and it would be alot easier to reccomend.

ok... I read the best electronica albums thingy and it all meant nothing to me and there's so much of it. so maybe somebody could just tell me the best of that bearing in mind that I already like the prodigy and kid 606?

It might help to let us know which era Prodigy you like, since no two albums are alike. If you're looking for drum'n'bass or jungle, try:

Meat Beat Manifesto, 99% or Actual Sounds & Voices
We, The Square Root of Negative One
Aphex Twin, Richard D. James Album
Amon Tobin, Supermodified, or anything but Chaos Theory (which I do actually enjoy)
Squarepusher, Big Loada

Or just some solid techno, from dancy to down-tempo:

Primal Scream, XTRMNTR
Underworld, Dubnobasswithmyheadman (my all-time favorite electronic disc)
Plaid, Rest Proof Clockwork
Four Tet, Rounds
Boards of Canada, Music Has the Right to Children
Pole, 3

A few people around here — Imprezu21 in particular — can probably help guide you further.

you like kid 606?

that is sometimes not very "listenable".

even abrasive at times depending on which you are listening to.

Kill sound before...
Is Great!

I will put together a list of some of my faves that are easy to get ahold of and ones that every music fan should have in their collection!!

It is hard to recall these albums, most of em' i have listened to so many times i barely cann anymore!

i will work on it!

Ok.
Here is a list.
Is it definative, not really.
But it will be a good starting point.

This is hard, having so many albums to choose from.I always find this the hardest thing to do.
Here goes...for me this could change daily.

Autechre-Incunnabula
Royksopp-Melody A.M
Aphex Twin-Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Tosca-Suzuki
Blue States-Nothing Changes under the Sun
Roni Size-Reprazent
Basement Jaxx-Rooty
Kruder and Dorfmeister-The k and d sessions
Villalobos-Alcachofa
Bjork-Homogenic
Esem-Serial Human
Boards Of Canada-ANY ALBUM
Tricky-Maxinquaye
Lackluster-Showcase
Aphex Twin-Richard D. James Album
Wagon Christ-Musipial
Squarepusher-Music is a Rotted One Note
Air-Premieres Symptomes
Amon Tobin-Bricolage
Plaid-Parts in the Post
Dabrye-One/Three
Thievery Corporation-The Mirror Conspiracy
Massive Attack-Blue Lines
Portishead-Dummy

I have been kind of going through a trip-hop/downtempo renaissance as of late.So that is evident in this list.

There is a ton of stuff i ommited on purpose that are completely essential, because it will be too hard to find or is ony available on vinyl.

Once you get a "base" sound that you are interested in.Just dive deep into it.Most of the time people are too lazy to research music. They just accept whatever is thrown at them on the radio.Which is sad, becasue there is so much music out nowadays it is almost impossible to keep up.Ask anyone who is fanatical about music, and they will tell you how hard it is, but it is also rewarding.

The search is important. It is like when I was a kid.I would buy baseball cards, but i hated buying complete sets becaue it took the fun and excitement out of completeing the set pack by pack.
It is the same with music, at least for me.If i find some no name album or artist that blows me away either live or on disc, I am exstatic until the next one comes along.
I seriously cannot go a week without buying music.I probabbly average 5-7 cds and 3-4 pieces of vinyl a week. Its like second nature now, it is a part of me whether I like it or not.I dont forsee changing for a while.

Enough preaching.

Like they say "dont be a sheep" make up your own mind, and make your own decisions. There are tons of websites out there that can help you get your footing in any kind of genre of music.

I agree that music should be researched, I'm tierd of "sheeping" and listening to same old same old I want to know what's out there and believed there had to be more... now I've found the more so to speak!

First post! This topic got the ol' hamster in my head going so I decided to finally register.

Anyways, to me it sounds like you're looking for some good sounding accessible electronic music, not necessarily genre specific. Just good stuff.

Old prodigy is win. New prodigy not so much. Up to Music for the Jilted Generation, anything Howlett did was magic. After Jilted, it all turned to muck. I still feel sadness!! Smiler

So if I can suggest some albums/artists to look into that are generally accessible, and in my opinion required for all serious enthusiasts.

Hernan Cattaneo - Renaissance - The Master Series. Argentinian deep/prog house at its finest. Remixes Max Graham, Underworld, Dereck Howell, Hybrid. Unreal.

Plump DJ's - Another Plump Night Out - Classic breaks, wicked party tracks. Can't help but smile when Plump DJ's is pumping.

UNKLE Sounds - Unkle vs Unkle 2004 2 CD - I have a weakness for anything UNKLE.

If you want some good techno, look into the baron of techno, Dave Clarke. You want good drum n bass? Look into Andy C, king of the dubplates. You into down tempo and ambient? Start with Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman). You want dancey/trancey stuff? Can't forget Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren.

I could go on all night!! Anyways, hope this first post was of some minor use!

You prefer new unkle to "good" unkle??
I cannot stand anything james lavelle has done since mo' wax was bought and dismantled.

In saying that i know unkle has not been coming out on mo'wax, i am just saying you think unkle, you have to think of the heyday with dj shadow.

The newer stuff is so generic it is hard to tell its difference fromeverything else that is out there. It has no personality.

I do have the album you are talking about i bought it as an import off of ebay.I have listened to it 2-3 times and shelved it.

Good one.I totally space on this one all the time.It just seems to slip out of my radar for too long.
I pulled it out the other day after i saw you put it on here.Quite Excellent.

Kudos.

I lik eold pole the best.Pole 3 is good but a little too ambient for my tastes.Pole 1 and 1 are my faves.

Unfortunately, the only We I still own (blame a hurricane and 40 feet of pine tree) is Decentertainment, which I personally regard as their weakest. I've been slowly recovering some of the collection I lost that summer, but my listening habits have shifted even more towards rock and pop in the last 5 to 10 years and I'm more likely to buy new than replace old. So it's been an arduous process. Most of them I can do without, but every now and then I'm reminded of a Square Root of Negative One or Selected Ambient Works, and I wish I could dig 'em out of a box somewhere. Woe is me.

Aye, it seems as though James Lavelle to you is like Liam Howlett to me. The old stuff had soul, the new stuff is generic mish mash.

And of course Unkle was fantastic with shadow, but who wouldn't be? He's like Micheal Jordan! But even sans Shadow, Lavelle still rips it up for me.

Ahh music, so damn subjective Smiler. We at least agree Shadow is god?

of course shadow is exceptional.

i dont dislike lavelle, he is a good dj.

but as far as his studio stuff, it is pretty lame IMO.

i remember liking the prodigy especially the first two albums, i still do.There "time" has passed though, unless they want to come with a complete stunner.
