Sounds interesting, I'll have to give them a listen when I get home tonite.

For anyone who likes darker ambient/shoegaze I highly recommend Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life. Check their myspace out here . Easily one of the best albums I've heard this year.

Last year had some other good shoegaze releases that haven't been mentioned: A Sunny Day in Glasgow, the Twilight Sad, To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie and Airiel.

Labradford - Prazision, E Luxo So, A Stable Reference (hell anything they did)
Loscil - Plume, Submers, First Narrows

Indeed, Labradford and Loscil seems to be two important ambient references. You should also check a band named The Dead Texan, which doesn't exists anymore, i think. Nice gloomy ambient music. Other ambient/shoegaze artists that comes in my mind right now:

Winterlight
Logh
Manual
P. Wilkerson

lest we forget the under-appreciated Flying Saucer Attack and their rather magnificant albums 'chorus' and 'further'.

also Rosy Parlane's sublime 'Jessamine' (though i'm not sure if that would be classed more as drone than ambient. either way it demands you hear it)

I've never heard of that Rosy Parlane. i should check it. Flying saucer attack are not a master of their art, but it's a pretty decent band.

Cool, please let me know what you think. I'm listening to your recommendation, Belong's October Language. I think it's freakin brilliant! As noise/ambient music, you can't beat it. My copy is from emusic, so it'll be cool to hear this on CD.

Downloaded Belong's other record, Colorloss Record, and it's another fine effort. This one has buried vocals buried underneath melodic noise.

this thread is a godsend! Big Grin
got Belong's October Language (couldn't find Colorloss yet) and Alcest's Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde. They're both excellent.
Also got Pacific UV's new one Longplay 2 which has a bunch of vocals and sounds more post-rock than ambient (btw, is there a difference between post rock and shoegaze???)

found all of that on a great message board: AfterThePostRock. It's full of post rock, ambient, shoegaze, everything!!!! check it out

shoegaze doesn't need to be rock. a wall of electronic sound is shoegaze.

I forgot about Fields "Everything Last Winter" from just last year. I heard the song "If You Fail We All Fail" yesterday on Soma, and I thought "Oh, what is that shoegaze?" Then I realized, I actually had the album, and listened to it again, probably for only the second or third time. It's funny when you get to the point that you don't even remember the albums you had from just the last year. Anyway, it's a pretty good shoegaze-ish album.

Christopher Bissonnette's album that I reviewed on my blog (In Between Words) is a freakin incredible ambient drone album a la Eluvium (except much more strong/loud).

a shoegaze pop-rock record from 2008: Lust lust lust by The Raveonnettes, if you like repetitive melodies. All songs sounds the same, so if u love 1 song you'll love all the record. I think that each songs deserves a 7/10 IMO

That's what I'm currently listening to. I'm a sucker for this J&MC sound. This record and Distortion are constantly playing in my house.
