First off i dont know whos list that was with
The books are chopped up folk rock...its alittle glitchy with the vocals but not really dance or idm?
GSBE claiming idm?
Cujo is amon tobins first album under an alter ego.
And bonobo is far more instrumental hip-hop than idm or dance or whatever.

But what really is idm...intelligent dance music?Alot of idm is not really danceable...i think it is for the more mature audinces in dance?People who dont like the poppy dance that dominates the easily influenced "teenage" crowd...anyways...to my favorites...this is off the top of my head mind you?

Amon Tobin-Anything he touches is golden.

Cex-Role Model

Board of Canada-Music has the right to children, beatiful place in the country ep

Aphex twin-And all his alter egos. There is not many artists that i would buy a cd with no remorse...aphex twin is one.A genious!

Autechre-Incunabula...there first and most accesible album!Great album.

The Black Dog-Bytes,Spanners...2 clasics from the better known as plaid!

Bola-Fyuti, Soup

Wagon Christ-Musipal

Dj/Rupture-Minesweeper Suite

Kid 606-Kill sound before sound kills you

TLs-Stay down,Tiny Reminders

Just check out any warp or skam release for some good idm Albeit maybe about 4-5 years ago.But they are still putting some good stuff out. Some more next time!

Good evening!

Not to beat this too far into the ground, I would never, EVER call Godspeed IDM or any sort of electronic act, and would hesitate before calling any of their albums "electronic-influenced;" having loops (as f#a#oo did) does not imply electronics, and as a group they generally reject artifice like electronics (in the f#a#oo liner notes, note the "W/OUT ANY KEYBOARDS!") in their music.

Yes. Sticking the IDM tag on them is a pretty confusing action, though I can stick by calling their music "electronic" better than I can with Godspeed.

Good Post.....

Dance/Electronica Albums to Consider are:

1) Underworld - "Dubnobasswithmeheadman" (I do like "Beaucoup Fish" better, but I would recommend "Dubnobasswit.." as the strongest album)
2) Dj Shadow - Endtroducing
3) Ltj Bukem - "Logical Progression"
4) Richie Hawtin - "Decks EFX & 909"
5) Coldcut - "70 Minutes of madness"
6) Various Artists - "Lost in Space Drum n Bass 200"
7) 2manyDjs - "As heard on radio soulwax"
8) Mathias Schaffhauser - "Lido Hotel"
9) Kruder & Dorfmeister - "The K&D sessions"
10) Massive Attack - "Blue Lines" (My fave is "Protection", but everybody prefers "Blue Lines" & "Mezzanine
11) Prodigy - "Music for a Jilted Generation" (again, I perfer "Experience" slightly more, but I suggest "Music for a...")
12) Tricky - "Maxinquaye"
13) Portishead - "Dummy" (I heard the second album "Portishead" first, and slightly pefer that, but get "dummy")
14) DJ Food & DK - "Now Listen"
15) Aim - "Cold Water Music" (Prefer "Hinterland")
16) David Holmes - "Presents the free assocation"
17) The Herbaliser - "Something wicked this way comes"
18) Danny Tenaglia - "Global Underground"
19) Leftfield - "Leftism" (yes, It had to be here somewhere)
20) Amon Tobin - "Supermodified"

I am a huge DJ Shadow fan as well, but he is considered Drum 'n Bass not Electronica. Trance is my favorite kind of Electronica and is dance in its purest form IMHO. For great Trance/dance, check out Ayla and ATB. There is also some beautiful trance music mixed with piano by the Cynic Project, which you should still be able to find at www.mp3.com Daft Punk is also a great place to start for Trance/Electronica and their offshoot, one song project and one of my favorite trance songs of all time: Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust. GIVE IT A LISTEN!

I have never before in my life heard of DJ Shadow as being Drum N' Bass! That's absolutely ridiculous! Call it electronica or hip-hop if you like, but he is world's away from drum n' bass.

Are you kidding? DJ Shadow, as you recall from Endroducing, calls himself a "student of the drum". He even says in the cover information that he uses "NO ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT" to make his music, only turntables and vinyl. Just take a listen again to Building Steam With A Grain of Salt or Midnight in A Perfect World. It is infused with the drum break beats he is best known for. Sure, by many accounts he is filed under the "electronica" genre, but if you give him a listen, and then listen to your typical electronica artist like Daft Punk or Spring Heel Jack (maybe not quite so typical) you can notice a definate difference, and as far as I'm concerned, DJ Shadow is not in the same "genre" as those artists.

Electronica was a label intended to seperate artists who made electronic music from those who made techno, but has evolved into the all encompassing term for the whole genre. Daft Punk make house influenced techno. DJ shadow, as evidenced by the DJ title he has taken can be refered to as instrumental hip-hop or electronica. A peak on Allmusic.com shows the genre's he is listed under is Electronica, with styles listed as Turntablism, Electronica, Ambient, Breakbeat, and Trip-hop. Drum N' Bass or Jungle is more associated with artists like Goldie, LTJ Bukem, and Roni Size, who bear little similarity to DJ Shadow's work. So, you are right that he is not in the same genre as artists like Daft Punk, but wrong to call his music Drum N' Bass.

I should leave this alone. Electronica is not my forte (rhymes with fort, just as torte rhymes with tort...stfu,m.) But, S, you jogged my memory. I got a drum and bass (what the fu*k is this jungle sh*t?) seven years ago... Roni Size and Reprazent "New Forms." That's it. I have no idea if it compares to our bud DJ Shadow. When I discussed Shadow at another thread, it was to call out an obvious spammer. Peace, bros, or at least, respect.

S, www.allmusic.com is where I got the fact that he is under the electronica genre listing that I mentioned in my post. I guess that is what I have considered him since my friends and I first started listening to him when he hit MoWax. We also listened to the likes of The Chemical Bros. and the sort, and we knew shadow was so different, and maybe we couldn't place it. So, hearing how much he incorporated drum beats into his mixes, we called his style Drum 'n Bass. At any rate, you are right in all technicality. Thanks for the comments.

I use the terms "electronica" and "electronic music" almost interchangeably. I use these terms when there is no better term available, which applies to many artists. I stopped using the term "techno", except for Detroit techno and everything that tries to emulate the detroit techno aesthetic. I also like to put an adjective in front of the "electronica" to elaborate a bit. I've also been phasing out the term "IDM" except for things that really sound like Boards of Canada.

A genre shouldn't be thought of something that an artist sits in, but should be thought of as an adjective-of-sorts for when you describe artists to other people.

not beat a dea horse...but drum n'bass usually doesnt drop below

140 bpm's also...once it is lower than that it goes into a differnt catgory...like ebm or whathave you.

And also almost every form of music today uses a drum "break" of some form. And are not turntables and mixers electroic equipment?

I know for a fact that he uses anmpc 60 or an mpc 1000 to sequence most of his tracks...that is if he did not moveon to sequencing with a computer.

I think that almost every artist today can fall into some sub-category of electronic...if u consider the fact that 99% of musicians use some form of electronic instrumentor device.

Anyways...categories schmategories...we canall agree that dj shadow is one of the most important and influential arists of are or any other time!

Blue Lines would get my vote for the best album of the 90's.... so, I guess that is definitely one of my favorite albums. I also love Tri Repetae++ and LP5 by Autechre, all the Selected Ambient Works albums by Aphex Twin, Music is Rotted One Note and Feed Me Weird Things by Squarepusher, Endtroducing, MHTRTC and Geogaddi by Boards of Canada, anything by Portishead, Tricky... and Massive Attack too, I guess. Bjork too, especially Homogenic. I also love The Orb's Ultraworld Adventures album and Orbus Terrarum. I love Four Tet a lot too. And Prefuse = amazing. Orbital 2 is also a phenomenal album.... ahhh!!!!

And really, the list could be endless. There's too much to mention!!!

For some really out there electronica, check out Cursor Miner. Both his albums (Explosive Piece of Mind & Plays God) feature a lot of different styles from pounding drill n bass to melodic techno pop. Well worth seeking out.

Let's see, good electronica, let me just say that I consider that a lot of music can fall somewhere under the title of electronica, think of em' as hybrids:

DJ Spooky:Under the Influence
Bjork:Debut, Homogenic, Post, Vespertine
Chemical Brothers:Brother's Gonna Work it out
Theivery Corporation:The Outernational Sound
Prodigy:Music for the Gilted Generation
Prefuse 73:One Word Extinguisher
DJ Shadow:Entroducing, Private Press, U.N.K.L.E.
The Crystal Method:Vegas
Stereolab:Emperor Tomato Ketchup
RJD2:Deadringer
Jazzanova:In Between
AIR:Moon Safari, Talkie Walkie
Zero 7Simple Things, When It Falls
Blackalicious:Nia, Blazing Arrow

There's some, and I know that some of these aren't typically considered Electronica, but they've got electronic tendencies. Besides some of the stuff out there that is considered Electronica sucks donkey junk

yes i agree alot of artists could fall into electronic. But blackalicious is not one of them...they are straight up indie rap!And i dont agree with dj shadow being considered electronic...if anything it leans more towards a post-rock album.Anyways...

I've always been a great fan of Orbitial since I first heard their album "In Sides" almost 8 years ago.. Since I primarily like that kind of sound it's no wonder I've also enjoyed Plaid and The Black Dog. Two very excellent and wroth while names amongst the ambient greats!

I also noticed someone posted Air - Talkie Walkie.. I just recently (5months ago actually) added this to my collection.. very good indeed... very relaxing and quite catchy! (not really much of a describtion but thats all I have time for right now) Razzer
