I originally posted this in another forum but I thought I'd try it here too:
So I was listening to "Snookered" from Bromst and had a moment of ridiculous deja vu. I start cycling through my Xiu Xiu collection and realize that he lifted a lot of his idea for the production, especially in the introduction from Xiu Xiu's "20,000 deaths for eidelyn gonzales, 20,000 deaths for jamie peterson." The weird part is he didn't sample it but made a really obvious attempt to copy some of the sounds like the wood block hits and the warm sounding synth and the meter. Even the drone that comes in is reminiscent of the drone that enters on the original Xiu Xiu. Because this is definitely not sampled I feel like Deacon is passing this as his own. However, it's not a straight rip though, so I don't want to point the plagiarism finger either. It sounds like homage taken to an extreme.
I find Dan Deacon to be pretty flat and boring, despite how annoying most of his sounds are, so it wouldn't surprise me to find out he was unoriginal too.
I find Dan Deacon to be a lot of fun (especially Spiderman of the Rings). I just enjoy the rhythmic patterns he develops, and I like process music in general where you can hear how the different layers play off of each other.
Oh, and I didn't notice the similarities in those two songs until you mentioned it. Eh, I don't know if it was intentional or not. My guess would be no.
