a) the hell? Why would an electronic fan think that Justice/Daft Punk are indie? That's like saying a Shins fan thinks Red Hot Chili Peppers is indie... which makes no sense.
b) it is not a bad thing or a good thing! It just means that no matter how many awesome indie releases come out in '08, they won't matter, because the mainstream Americans won't recognize it. Once the Trio make electronic relevant again
(like they did in the 90's) hopefully more people will give Digitalism & Autechre the respect they deserve.

And don't go getting ahead of yourself with the Burial assumptions, this album has brought dubstep to a lot of people who had never listened to it before; much in the same way that Portishead and Massive Attack brought triphop to the masses.

Yes, I am one of "those people".
BUT you forget that I already listen to a lot of electronica in the first place, and am open-minded about it. My friends are not, they will just keep on listening to their DJ Tiesto and Darude... this is why we need the Trio in '08, to bridge the gap between indie and braindead trance.

No, I was trying to understand what you were using the word "indie" to describe, a sound or a status. A big fan of techno or IDM would call Gui Boratto "indie" because he's mainstream house music (I happen to love him). Like someone who listens to Boris might really be into metal, but Boris still has that "indie appeal." See what I'm saying?

I tend to largely prefer minimal genres of electronic music. In that respect, electronic never went away, and 2007 was actually a fantastic year (the aforementioned Gui Boratto and Pantha du Prince, Matthew Dear/False/Audion, Uusitalo, The Field). The only thing I missed was a real Matthew Herbert record, unless I overlooked one of his pseudonyms. And let's not forget more celebrated stuff like Burial, Daft Punk, Justice, etc. OTOH, I always felt trip hop and IDM were massively overhyped..

Justice is the only electronic I've been able to get into. I tried to like Burial and Autechre, but I just couldn't get into them.

riiiight.

i disagree. people who listen to "braindead trance" would be much more likely to respond to something out of the house, or techno genre, than say "the Trio" (which I assume is the bristol-electro/rock bands you were talking about earlier). thus, wouldn't something such as microhouse (say plastikman), progressive house (gui boratto), or minimalist techno (ricardo villalobos) be a better conduit to indie, or more experimental music?

The difference is that to people who like House, Amon Tobin matters.

I don't know, i think fans of jungle would appreciate amon tobin more than fans of house.

yeah... if u like darude, there is a compilation series you should check out called "Euro Club Hits" --

it's pretty clear that dance music is coming back around the world -- just check the recent big American hip-hop and R&B hits which are clear rip-offs of the european dance style.....

here's the direct iTunes link to the "Euro Club Hits" series.....
