been trying real hard to listen to the 2007 material but i continue to go back to selected ambient works vol. II (aphex twin) .. this might be one of my all-time favorite albums when im not submersed in that particular disc, im probably most likely listening to lcd soundsystem or gui boratto. im trying to get the field cd but haven't been able to find the torrent or the energy to buy the damn thing

I'm still not a huge fan of Roots and Crowns, but I can see some similarities between Califone and the Books. I think it's the sort of shambling, junkyard percussion they both use that makes their sounds somewhat similar.

I've been listening to Pole's Stiengarten a lot lately. I haven't heard his older stuff, but I really like the new one.

Madness! I'd have to say Roots and Crowns is my favorite album from Califone, not to mention it's easily in my top 3 from last year. It's a stellar album. I just listened to it yesterday!!

I think Gui Boratto's Chromophobia and Pantha Du Prince's This Bliss are terrific.

I know I agree... as do the majority on this board.

Lately I've been transfixed by Beautumn, an electronic-based ambient artist with a new album out now Northing. Where he excels is subtly melding found sounds with electronic haze, then dropping a plodding downtempo beat to move the song forward (see "Tebe"). Excellent detail work on this album and very trance-inducing.
Oh, and this isn't new stuff but I can't seem to go a few days without hearing Jan Jelinek's Tierbeobachtungen (had to look that one up haha) and his earlier LP Komischer Pitch. In a sea of DIY Ambient electronic artists, Jelinek really stands out with his quirky, offcenter ambient grooves. I like the way he blends strange tics into his highly repetitive songs, giving it a surreal edge. "A Concert For Television" leads off his newest with light processed plucks...however the serenity is soon broken by an obnoxious waspy oscillated synth that jumps awkwardly between octaves. Its the fact that Jan always defies my expectations with a sound that keeps me engaged but also hopelessly lost inside his compositions. Great stuff.

Yeah, it was off to a stellar start with those three Kompakt records (The Field, Gui Boratto, Pantha du Prince), but I haven't been floored by much lately, with the only exceptions being the Pole and Amon Tobin records. I find the new Caribou record to be just okay (the last few tracks are awesome, though). The Digitalism record has some high points ("Zdarlight," "The Pulse") but is wildly uneven and much too long. The Dntel record is also pretty mit-or-miss, but hot DAMN, that track with Grizzly Bear is absolutely fantastic. The Chemical Brothers album pretty much sucks. The new Cornelius record is nice, but I honestly haven't given it enough attention to form a strong opinion on it. The Fennesz/Sakamoto collaboration is pretty, but not nearly as rich as Fennesz's solo work earlier in the decade.

I've been loving the hell out of the new Justice record, as well as Matthew Dear's newest, and Caribou's latest joint.

Both are good, but I find Chromophobia far more gripping than This Bliss. Sometimes, while I'm listening to that one, I find it just fading into the background and I ignore it.

I think I would have agreed with you up until recently, but the Pantha du Prince album is probably my favorite of those two records nowadays. While "Asha" and "Saturn Strobe" are solid microhouse tracks, songs like "Eisbaden" are like throwbacks to mid-90s IDM (esp. Autechre, Jega) and it makes me appreciate the album on an entirely different level. Nonetheless, of the three major Kompakt releases ( Chromophobia, This Bliss, From Here We Go Sublime), The Field's record is my definite favorite. Like whoa.

Right now my "it" electronic group are The Chemical Brothers. I just picked up Surrender yesterday. I absolutely love that album, it has a nice variety. My favourite tracks are "Music: Response", "Out of Control", "The Sunshine Underground" and "Hey Boy Hey Girl". I think my next two album pick-ups of theirs will be Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole. I've read some mixed reviews on Come with Us, and I don't understand what some of the dislike is all about, I really like the album. I can't really say much on Push the Button or We Are the Night since I haven’t heard them, but from what I've read (on here and music critic sites) We Are the Night is awful.

I was wondering if anyone here can give me some artist/album suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. I’ve only been listening to electronic music for a little over a year, and I am still confused to this day about this genre, so I keep it safe and listen to what I’m familiar with. Here are some electronic bands that I like: Gui Boratto The Chemical Brothers Isolée Junior Boys The Knife Kraftwerk Ladytron LCD Soundsystem M.I.A. The Postal Service Klaus Schulze Sally Shapiro Tangerine Dream Yellow Magic Orchestra Electronic related: Björk Cluster Depeche Mode Brian Eno New Order Patrick Wolf Xiu Xiu

Uhm off the top of my head I got a couple: Autechre - the reigning king of IDM. Mouse on Mars - stunning sound crafstmen, and they have their own cartoonish, fun sound. Squarepusher - he has his own niche in a crowded field, amazing stuff. Proem - next to Autechre in the dictionary under "IDM." Gridlock - moar IDM greatness. Biosphere - one of my favorite ambient artists definitely highly recommended. Blamstrain - try to get Disfold (one of my favorite electronic-ambient records). Fennesz - slightly left-field electronic if you like experimentation with a pop sensibility (the album "plus 47 degrees..." is much more concerned with noise/drone if you like that stuff then check it out). Boards of Canada - no one can really capture that vintage analog synth sound quite like these guys very downtempo and relaxed. Four Tet - Beats, beats, beats and some chimes/guitar cut-ups. It sounds simple but he has perfected this formula. Jan Jelinek - I like people who wow me with strange sonic juxtaposition and this guy does it better than most. Quirky-cool loops galore. Loscil - great ambient-techno artist. He has very simple yet unprecedented synths and a great knack for just letting a song develop on its own. Oval - he developed his own cd-skipping glitch software and uses it to create incredible compositions. Mokira - his most accomplished album "Cliphop" says all you need to know. Glitchy steady beats. Matmos - detractors may write them off as being too "gimmicky" but the songs speak for themselves. These guys utilize unheard-of samples and create songs where songs should never be (like in a hospital performing liposuction). Also if you are a nut for ambient/downtempo IDM like me check out Nebulo, Beautumn and Stendeck. All three have released fantastic albums in the past year or so.
