Yes, we know our search engine is ineffective (and we've actually had to disable part of its functionality to prevent it from slowing down other portions of the site), but our development team is currently at work on re-writing the search engine from scratch, so that it will be not only effective, but a whole lot faster than it is now.

With any luck the new search will be up within a month. In the meantime, thanks for your patience, and yes, we share your pain.

An update: Our new search engine is now live on our site. It is somewhere between beta and production, so there may still be a few kinks to work out, but search times should be much much faster.
