For now, I'd say the first belongs in World and the last two in Rock. If we get enough posts about them, we may be able to open up some new topics. So, I won't move this to Rock yet, unless it's OK to put ska in the rock section. I imagine for this specific thread, it probably is. We do have this.

I meant the title of your thread: Ska/Punk/Hardcore. The first (Ska) would be in world...

Yeah that is interesting. I would think ska, because it is so closely related to reggae, would be more R&B, since reggae is more like R&B than any other genre.

There are a couple of Punk threads in the Rock section, very little discussion going on though. I don't think many of the regulars here listen to much of the second wave of punk bands. I do however! And in my opinion Operation Ivy are not World Music!

OK. I'm moving this to Rock. Now stop worrying about the difference between Ska/Punk and Ska-Punk and respond to the first post!! I have every Rancid album, including the greatest cassette packaging ever, Life Won't Wait's flip-top cigarette box. I love them. Now, somebody in the know, please compare and contrast Operation Ivy and Rancid. That would be a start.

Operation Ivy just come across to me as younger, more emotional, and more indebted to their ska influences. Rancid are more polished and more professional, with the Clash influence being more pronounced. I think the lessons learned in Operation Ivy really informed the direction of Rancid. As a buddy of mine said, he would've believed me if I told him that Energy was the first Rancid album! The songwriting improved, the production got better and more bass heavy, and everything just seemed much slicker overall. I knew a lot of die-hard Operation Ivy fans back then who rejected Rancid right away, but they all mellowed out eventually and embraced them both.

I watched the Woodie awards the other day and The Academy Is… put on by far the best performance. If you didn’t see their performance I was able to track it down and I posted the link below. Go check it out because it was great. http://www.mtvu.com/video/?id=1574351
