I got my post punk paper done, but since it was 1500 words and written in a couple hours, it isn't so impressive. It started out well but then I realized that I was writing way too much an instead of cutting back the first couple paragraphs a bit so I could make the whole topic equally informative, I just cut out a ton of what I had to say.

Do you have it posted anywhere? I'd still love to take a peek.

Hey thanks JGlass. I'll have to look into the Silicon Teens, I don't think I've heard anything by them. That little bit on the Slits was nice. It also made me think that could be an excellent topic for a paper in and of itself: Women and Post-punk. There weren't many, but they did cause a splash. In addition to the Slits:

The Raincoats
Kleenex (AKA LiLiPUT)
Essential Logic
Lydia Lunch
Salem 66
Delta 5
Au Pairs

And later the whole Riot Grrl movement.

Haha, yeah, the funny thing is I mention The Raincoats, James Chance related groups (with Lydia Lunch), and Mars in my paper then go on to talk about how the Slits were such a big deal because they were girls. But, the Slits were originally all girls, so I guess it was still a big deal.

YO, does anyone know the name of the female fronted band with that song that goes,
" I know he's gettin' breezy,
I know he's gettin' breezy
I know he's gettin' breezy
and the drugs don't work no more?"

I've been trying to look into them more yet still have nothing.
Thanks a bunch.

oh and to add to the convo, New misfits suck, that's about all I have to say about "post punk". Even new GG would probably suck, thankfully there's no risk of that little heralding.
CHEERS.

The Desperate Bicycles are a British Post-Punk band that I had never heard. They put out one LP, Remorse Code in 1979 and a few singles. I'm not sure any of their stuff was ever available on CD and trying to buy this stuff on Ebay would set you back at least a hundred bucks. This morning, I found this fantastic site: Desperate Bicycles

You can listen to (or download!) just about every note they ever recorded. Good stuff.

That's funny. I actually made an article on that subject half a year ago concentrating on the groups' feministic content. I concentrated on The Slits, The Raincoats, Delta 5, Au Pairs and Ludus.

The second album by The Raincoats, Odyshape, probably contains some the most adventurous and beautiful music to come out of the postpunk-scene.

I like the return of intelligent punk music at the end of the 1990s - early 2000s with different great bands such as Refused, Mclusky, early The Hives, Atari Teenage Riot, The (international) noise conspiracy. I think those bands are better than anything post-punk right now.

McLusky are a band that put out one great album, but there's a lot of good post-punk and No Wave style stuff that's still being released.

One problem is that the term post-punk gets thrown around so willy-nilly now that the term has become watered down and less people really understand what it refers to and sounds like.

That's the rub though idn'it? I mean post-punk wasn't meant to be a 'sound', it was more of time period. It's what critics called the interesting music that was springing up everywhere once punk had supposedly run it's course. I mean The Specials have very little in common with Mission of Burma, yet I've still seen them both referred to as 'post-punk.' It's hard for me to use the term to define any of the current crop of bands like McClusky or Interpol, unless you add the word 'revival' to the phrase.

But when you hear a band like Clipd Beaks, who are the first of the new crop to come to my brain when I hear "post-punk", they just feel like they could've fit perfectly in that time frame.

No Wave actually tends to be a sound that's more easy to identify yet it seems like less bands go for it.

I totally agree with you about Interpol though... and I would consider McLusky to be punk. O' Bloc Party, how'd you ever get that post-punk mention from p4k?

I'm not sure it's my very favorite, but it's pretty damn close. While I'm not a huge fan of Punk, I'm very grateful that it existed because it spawned so much great stuff in its wake.

Really? I didn't get that impression from them. Not to be a hater, but I kinda thought were a Liars rip-off. Maybe I didn't listen enough.

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

I wouldn't say that post-punk was a direct result of punk. In my mind it would've happened with or without punk showing that anyone could make music.

And I've yet to hear anyone even mention Liars in reference to Clipd Beaks.. Liars are a No Wave rip-off (don't get me wrong, I love most Liars stuff) and Clipd Beaks share more of their sound with This Heat (post-punk) than they do with DNA (who are one of the No Wave bands Liars are frequently said to have ripped off).

Their only stand-out album is McLusky Do Dallas. My Pain and Sadness.., and The Difference Between Me and You... are average at best; definitely could never stand-up next to Do Dallas.

I dunno, J. To me "Meltr" sounds like it could've been take right off of They Threw Us In A Trench.... Just a personal opinion.

I can hear it on that song, but mainly because of the bassline.

I am a fan of music today that could be considered no-wave derivative (Liars, etc.) and I was wondering what album(s) you guys would recommend starting with to get into no-wave?
