Hrm. I've recently been catching up on some of the classics of fantasy - Wolfe, Vance, and last month Lieber. I bought both of the 'Book of Lankhmar' collections in the Fantasy Masterworks collection.
I made it through the first one with mixed feelings, but gave up half way through the second. I guess it was worth reading to see where it fit into the development of the genre, and the two main characters were initially quite interesting, but the writing just didn't work for me. By the end (or as far as I got) it was almost as if he was writing cariacatures of his earlier stories. *Sigh* I'd wanted to like this, after great experiences with other classic fantasy, but oh well. I know he's fairly well regarded though, so I'm sure you'll find other fans here.
Yeh, Fritz Leiber is a favourite to turn to when I want some escapism. I've read all the Fafhrd/Mouser stories and absolutely adore them.
I especially love the one with the circular tower in the forest; name escapes me. The Wanderer, Gather, Darkness and Conjure Wife are all novels of his i enjoyed a great deal.
Still to read is his Tarzan book. Love it when people take on the Tarzan mythos.

I'm not really familiar with his work. But I don't know why, the other day I was thinking about "The Girl With the Hungry Eyes". It was a short story from a collection called Blood is Not Enough. I think his was the 2nd story in it. It was one of the 3 or 4 good stories in that book.
I read it 15 years ago. I was still in school.
All I remember is that it was a great story.
