I love Return of the Jedi, probably because I was so young when I was introduced to the films. Empire Strikes Back was awesome, but too dark for a little kid. A New Hope was also awesome, but lacked Ewoks. I loved the Ewoks as a child, and I still love the Ewoks now.
The newer films were entertaining, but not nearly as much as the original trilogy, even with their special effects. And Episode II might have been good, except I absolutely could not stand the character of Annikan.
RotJ gets the nod.
I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

True, Attack of the Clones could have been good, if only the acting haden't been so bad (from the guy who plays Anakin) and the film haden't been so flawed.
But there are good things about this film, we don't see much of Jar Jar (Thank...God), Ewan McGregor and Christopher Lee are good and the special effects rule.

i agree. i remember watching it for a second and third time and realizing that out of the entire, long film, there is one good acting scene out of Hayden Christensen (Anakin) in the whole outing; the scene in which he tells the queen about how he murdered the sandpeople ruthlessly.
my favorite film is return of the jedi, however. almost everyone i know says they like empire strikes back the best, but i think return of the jedi was better. that was the film that reeled me into the series because we had taped it off tv and i used to watch it relentlessly.
I love all the original Star Wars films of course and I even love the new ones...not becuase they are great cinema, but because I want to. It's the same with the Matrix sequels. I love the idea and the world that Lucas created so much that I will watch and enjoy whatever sequels he puts out. Can't wait to see the "creation" of Darth in Ep. III.

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back. -Face
It Started Good With Episode 4 Continued To Be Good With Empire Strikes Back Outdid Itselfe In Return Of The Jedi Went Slighty Downhill With Episode One But Still Made A Great Film Went Very Downhill And Let A Brief 2Min Scene Where Yoda Fights Be The Highlight Of The Film
Clearly Episode 4: A New Hope... It started it all, great emotion, amazing effects for the time (and now, actually..modelling kills cgi), and beautiful death star shots.
Death to Videodrome... long live the new flesh!

I don't know where else to put this, but can any one tell me the difference between "The phantom menace" and "A new hope". This is not a riddle, I'm really interested in this.

When "Star Wars" came out, that was its complete name. It was always intended to be the first of a trilogy. Lucas originally wanted to make three trilogies. He started with the first episode of the middle trilogy. It was only after "The Empire Strikes Back" (which was dubbed "Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back") came out in 1980, that "Star Wars" became known as "Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope." For all rereleases and video releases, "Star Wars" had the opening scroll changed to add the "A New Hope" title.
After completing the original trilogy, Lucas finally got around to the prequel trilogy. That's why "Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" is called "Episode 1", for chronological reasons within the series, not the way the films were released.
Lucas has decided he can't do the final trilogy anymore, and I don't recall what the major thematic reasons were to consider it in the first place. (But needless to say, they'd be called "Episodes 7,8 and 9".)
I hope this answers or solves the non-riddle.
If you're actually referring to what the phrases "A New Hope" and "The Phantom Menace" mean within the context of the series, that's something else entirely, but they do represent two different things. I assumed you meant the films instead of the meanings.

No, no. What I'm talking about is the story lines. They both felt very similar to me. Please give me some credit. I do know the history of the "Trilogy" set-up!!!

I just watched all the "Star Wars" DVDs (the first trilogy), and I continue to find "Return of the Jedi" a worthy entry. Of course, I think the first one is tops, so S and some of you others can slam me for that, but I'm tough enough to take it.
I never find any problems with the Ewoks. In fact, when they worship C-3PO and say they're gonna have the rest of the heroes for dinner, that's some of the best humor in the entire series. Also, S, I've always enjoyed the music at the end during Luke and Vader's duel. The only thing I never understood is why the Emperor didn't save himself, but maybe with Luke and Annakin double-teaming him, the punk just didn't stand a chance.

Empire Strikes Back. I never could quite put my finger on why I preferred it, until I watched some of the extras on the recent DVD release- the sheer scope of settings just made it feel 'larger than life' moreso than any of the others- in my mind, anyways... YMMV.

I'm not sure if anyones else has pointed this out 'cause when I saw the mistake, I rushed to reply, but the 4th Star Wars movie is called "A New Hope".
ROTS is the best StarWars film for me, probably because i was too young then to appreciate the first 3 trilogy and of course the first two prequels were no good as I'm sure everybody would agree with me. ROTS have great special effects, great action with enough balance of human emotions.
Meh, I wouldn't say they were that bad. Ep 1 was what it was, it was supposed to be and introduction and couldn't exceed those bounds very far, which was too bad because I think it really didn't live up to the model that the other movies set.
What did the five fingers say to the face?! Slllap!!

The child in me says, Episode IV – A New Hope (purely because it had everything altered in the original script to make it a more complete movie in its own right, as his first major endeavor after the classic American Graffiti… but my critical mind says, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
Why? Because the actors finally fell into their roles and really carried the story when the awesome special effects were not. Carrie Fischer and Harrison Ford had amazing chemistry, even if they hated each other’s guts; on and off the screen. The Star Wars universe matured to its pinnacle in Episode V.

Yay! So many people give the nod towards The Return of the Jedi i'm surprised. I love that movie and hold it up as my favorite of the series, when I first started reading reviews I was shocked when I saw my favorite of the series regarded as the weakest of the originals.
I know that The Empire Strikes Back is critically the best of the series it just isn't my favorite. The reason is ROTJ was the first of the series I saw as a kid.
I can look at it now and see what the critics have against it. The Ewoks foreshadowed a greater evil in the newer movies, and the re-hashing of the death star threat perhaps does show that Mr. Lucas was running out of ideas.
But look at what it does right. It is a tragic ending to a tragic hero -Anakin Skywalker- as father and son fight to the death. The special effects continue to dazzle and amaze, and it is still better than Episode one in terms of acting.
He is watching you...
