I'll be buying it, but I still prefer the original Death Star explosion at the End of "A New Hope" to the new Saturn-Like explosion pattern of the re-release. Other than that, I'm looking forward to it. My friend is working on the DVDs at this moment in Burbank.
I'm going to wait for the complete DVD set that will probably be released after Episode 3...actaully, there will probably be five or six complete sets available in the next decade, so I'll wait for one of those.

I can't believe that someone voted no. Star Wars is essential; if you have an axe to grind with the second, "first" trilogy, then go ahead ,but any household which claims to care about film, cinema, life, whatever you want to call it, needs Star Wars, if not for themselves, then for their progeny. Don't get hung up on The Hidden Fortress/ The Wizard of Oz comparisons, Star Wars (the first three) is unique, unless you've seen every Buck Rogers/ Flash Gordon serial ever made. Oops, even then, it's almost unique!

Whiel I am very excited about the Trilogy coming out in DVD and have already pre-ordered my copy, I am pretty upset that they won't be the original verions. I guess we have to made due with those on good ole VHS.

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back. -Face
Doesn't Lucas realize that people want the original versions as well? I want to own the version that blew everyone away in the theater back in the day. I want to own the version that is on the AFI list. I know that he is releasing his "finished version," I just wish that he didn't lose sight of the originals. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'm the kind of guy that normally hates CG. I prefer the original E.T. to the new one. What are Lucas and Speilberg going to do next? Are they going to replace Indiana Jones' gun with a walkie talkie as well?

Lucas has completely sh*t all over my childhood and the stinging hurt still. Not only do all the prequels suck beyond amazement, as they are all made as inoffensively and plastically as possibel for children, but every piece of crappy late-nineties CG in the new-old versions is a dagger in my soul. The magic is destroyed and whenever I watch them now I dread that stupid thing falling off the brontosaurus on the way to the bar, Jabba's snake crawl talking to Hans, and that dumbass song and dance routine with straw-lips. I dread the moments they come, a despise watching them, and a can't get out of my head how wrong they are afterwards. If Lucas had a non-commercial soul left, he'd restore my childhood to DVD...but he considers the new sh*t versions definitive so this likely will not happen in my lifetime. Screw the bastard. Speilberg is a complete ass too but I don't care for E.T. much so it's not as big a deal. I can't wait till they redo Jurassic Park with brand new, uninspiring dinosaurs and destroy the leaps that film made too.
Lucasfim Ltd has announced the original theatrical versions release of the first three "Star Wars" films are coming to DVD.
George Lucas will bring the first three original theatrical versions of the Star Wars movies – Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi – to stores on Sept. 12.
Each two-disc DVD set will include commentary by George Lucas and some cast and crew members. Lucasfilm will re-archive the movies on Dec. 31.

I'm still waiting for Lucas to release the original trilogy on dvd on its own, entirely separate from the "new" versions. Now, you might say he'll never do this. In fact, he said he'd never do it. Keep in mind, however, that he said he'd never release the original films, either. Yet, here they are.
My opinion is that Lucas will release anything if it'll make a buck. Of course, saying you won't release it first means lots of people will go ahead and buy seventy-five different versions of the same film. Not me. I'm still sticking to my VHS version for now.

You're taking a BIG risk just sticking with VHS. Tape gets old & deteriorate over time & VCR's do tend to get hungry, devouring said tapes making them unwatchable. Why not just buy them as-is with the Special Editions & just trash the discs you find offensive. I only have 3 REAL complaints with the new versions. The first is with 'A New Hope', the Greedo VS Han scene does look very crappy with Greedo taking the first shot. The Jabba scene, however, FANTASTIC! I love the DVD digital Jabba over that of the VHS Special Edition. He's bigger, he's badder, & when Han steps over him, he actually balls up his fist & acts annoyed that Han would dare do such a thing! The second, 'Empire Strikes Back', the extended Wampa scene. That costume looks awful! Lucas could've done better than that, or should of just left it alone! The hologram of the Palpatine's head? So much better on DVD & it's even played by Ian McDiarmid. In the original, it was some other actor who was never seen or heard from again! Lastly, in 'Return of the Jedi', the Sarlacc Pit, I REALLY hate the beak! Like the Wampa, he should have let it be! The Rancor scene? It is so well done! No longer does it really look like Mark Hammill was just standing in front of a projection screen! It's wonderful! So, I can admit, he didn't have to change the entire trilogy as drastically as he did, but, for the most part, it does look & sound so much better than it used to!

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"
