Perhaps I missed something, but could one of you Starwaraholichs tell me why the first movie is called "The phantom menace". Who or what is the phantom menace.

Well, the phantom was some purple spandex wearing superhero and the menace was Dennis. That's all I know. I spent the whole movie trying to block out all the parts that really sucked so I only remember Padme's sweet ass and Darth's mauling. Anyone?

Alright...I did pay too much attention to it. A friend just gave it to me actually so I should probably watch it again. It's be nice if someone would actually tell us what the title means, though. Doesn't have to be an essay, just give us the jyst.
Yeah, where are you guys? I thought that this would be an easy one, and that I was missing summitt. But apparently my suspicions that this title actually means nothing, and that it was used only 'cause it "sounded" cool, might be real.

Yeah, I thought someone might come up with this, but he's not much of a phantom, seein' as how everyone's aware of his existence, and he makes quite a scene when he turns up anywhere.

I didn't really think this was a serious thread. I thought this was a receptacle for lousy jokes to be told around the barbee while drinking your libation of choice and dumping on my hero Paul Kelly.
Now you REALLY want an answer? OK, I thought both logical answers were blatantly obvious. kd was getting there. In the actual movie, the "Phantom Menace" is provided by the Sith, but not so much by Darth Maul, but by that phantomy Darth Sideous, who obviously later becomes Emperor Palpatine. From what we know in later (earlier) films, he's a definite "Menace", but in this film, he's usually seen as a hologram or a bad cable signal (sorta "phantomy".)
I also accept the theory that Annakin Skywalker could become a "Phantom Menace" to be reckoned with later when the Sith take control of his soul and turn him to the Dark Side.
P.S. Just because I love some "Star Wars" movies doesn't make me a "Star Whoreaholic". Drink or smoke 'em if ya got 'em.

You seem upset! Where did you get the starwhoreaholic thing from. Hilarious!
Good to see you've been following my career. Or are you stalking me?
Oh, I'm sorry my opinions and tastes differ from yours, although, I don't see how I hung it on your hero Paul Kelly. I didn't know he'd become a religious figure, and that I would be charged with blasphemy and heresy for not liking him.
Where were you when I asked the question in the first place? What took you so long?

As for your hero Paul Kelly, excuse me for having different tastes to you, although I don't see how I hung anything on him. I didn't realise he had become deified, and that it was heresy and blasphemy not to like him. I'll see you when you burn me at the stake. I'm already half way there.
It does not fill me with confidence for this web site when a "forum moderator" goes on the attack because someone doesn't have similar tastes to her!!!

What time is it in Australia? I'm coming next August to New Zealand, but maybe I can make arrangements to come have a death match in Australia since you're implying that you're half-dead anyway. MetaCritic is MY life. The conflict arises when the rest of my family needs the computer and I have "real" people to entertain. Maybe you should check out my posts since you stated earlier that I was one of the ones who cracked you up earlier over at Classics.
Moi, I'm upset? As I said, if it's not TOO boring, check out some of my few posts around here. You are definitely cool with me, at least, so far, but maybe that's not that important to you. What about "The Phantom Menace"? You didn't REALLY care, did you?

Well after watching all the old Star Wars then watching the 2 prequals before seeing Revenge of the Sith, I remembered how crappy this movie was! Well compared to Sith and the old ones, it's just bad acting and it has Jar Jar! O my O my this is not supposed to be a comedy!!
