I think all the systems have a lot of potential. Resistence looked impressive and me being a Metal Gear fan, I would love to own a PS3 for MGS4. Unfortunately past that I don't know what else I would buy the 600 dollar console for. Metal Gear would be a seller for me, if the system wasnt so rediculously priced.
I could buy a 360 and a Wii and get two of my favorite series newest iterations (Halo 3, Super Smash Brothers Brawl) for the price of a PS3. The Blu-Ray player is a nice touch, and will be amazing if Blu-Ray takes off. If it doesnt however, the extre 100-200 dollars that got tacked onto the system will be for nothing.
Other than that I don't really know much about the PS3. Enlighten me if I'm wrong about anything.
Who is but the form following the function of what, and what I am is a man in a mask
Impressed? Not really. I hope you enjoy your new toy but anyone who spends that much on a console has more money then sense (especially as they always come down in price anyway).

As far as paying too much... these units cost sony about $900.00 to make... they are taking a $200.00 loss on these things, and hoping to make it up in blu ray sales. I know it doesn't have the best line up, and the 360 has had a year head start, BUT they can do so so much with this system in the next year, that overall I feel it is worth it.

Impressed with all the crazy stuff people did to get one yeah. I'll eventually get it but I don't mind waiting. I haven't played my pS2 that often lately anyhow and I got like a ton of games to beat on it still.

Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on one. New technology always excites me. It's crazy to think how far things have come in the last 15-20 years. For those of you who own one, let me know some details so I can get excited of what to look forward to.

I'm totally with you Musicalifragilisitic on exciting new technology....and like you as well, I wasn't able to get my hands on the PS3 on launch day. The Best Buy near my house apparently only had 16 units on launch day and it sold out in 15 minutes. Unf*ckinbelievable. When I asked the store clerks when they were getting new shipments in, they said something like January (?!?) Darn, I can't even get it for the holidays.
Best thing you guys can do is sign up for email alerts with every electronic store you can think of. I got mine from the ebgames pre order. They basically gave me a warning that it would be available in extremely limited quantities online, and it will be sometime in the evening. (pacific time) I know its kinda pathetic but I literally sat by my computer for almost 4 hours hitting the refresh button. I finally hit it at the right time, and got it. Just my $.02

Unfortunately I haven't gotten mine either yet, so now I have to waste my time reading the news and caring about the real world. Lebanon nearing civil war. Iraq in as much chaos as ever. Russia inching back towards totalitarian rule. Man this news stuff is depressing. But do not fret for me!! Soon I'll be able to screw Sony into selling me a PS3 for merely $600 and I'll be able to live my life without guilt and a conscience, the way it's meant to be for us Americans. (And yes, I'm screwing them because OF COURSE it really costs them $900 to make each additional console. I'm sure that does not include R&D costs for the last 4 years, and that after selling an initial amount, they won't be turning a profit. Because Sony is looking after us - it's what they do).
just stop it. what's the matter with you?

Haven't got one yet and not sure about buying one. I'm definately buying a Wii, i am undecided on the 360 or ps3. The price of the ps3 has put me off, i think ill just hold out and buy a brand spanking new computer, by the time i get one it'll be better than the next gen consoles spec wise
What are talking about new technology!? If you are that into new technology be a PC gamer, their stuff will surpase the PS3 within months. The PS3 is just old news wrapped in a new plastic case. Games like Resistence look and play great, but they are definately nothing NEW. 600 dollars for a system that's online components still don't compare to Microsoft's, whose exclusive titles are losing exclusiveness each passing day as companies decide to port to the 360, whose gaming experience will be nothing new like the Wii, with a format that is heading towards tanking like betamax; it just doesn't EXCITE me.

Are you saying that Blue Ray is the next Beta or Minidisc? Interesting theory. I certainly hope not as 50 gigs of storage compared to 8 gigs on dvd is a huge difference. It will only be expensive for so long. I think it's here to stay. Time will tell.
As far as why I choose not to play games on a pc...I find that personally, I enjoy sitting on my sofa in front of the tv. I enjoy playing on my 46 inch plasma screen as well. Plus, I find it is more suited to playing with friends, where sitting around a computer isn't the same.
I do agree that in two years that pc will have some better features than PS3, but as a lifetime console gamer, it's just not the same to me.

Ha. Do you completely ignore that the HDVD is competing with Blueray for the coveted next-gen format war. Do you completely ignore that it's sales are lagging noticably behind and analyst predict HDVD to take the lead with a larger more captivating library of movies, and the predicted less-than-stellar sales of the PS3 (mostly due simply to limited supply). Yeah, HDVD v. BluRay is the next Betamax v. VHS, and unless rumor of some kind of mutated merge happen, some one will lose

2 years?!? Maybe 6 months... You're still leaving out the fact that the 360 ALREADY has better online features ( Like say, being able to download products while playing games or having the system off, having a unified friends list)
Hear's a nice article by the NY Times that sums some stuff up you seem to want to neglect. PS3 Review
Don't just pick out the little pieces of my argument you think you can combat and ignore the rest.
Brandnamecommercial... we've all read the articles. We all know about it, bud. Sony's stock prices decreasing, the unviability and infeasiblity of Sony's moves. The fact that Sony will be bankrupt in 2 years because it is taking a $200 hit every time each PS3 unit is sold. We've all read about it.
So what, Sony is taking a risk. PS3 has just been launched...give it a chance to prove itself with its own innovations. So Blu-Ray as we speak is the Betamax of the video wars. I say it is a little too early to make any predictions.
Do you know how many people have been calling Best Buy everyday when the next shipment of PlayStation 3 units is gonna come? These are the people who know what games Sony has been capable of releasing in the past and are looking forward to PS3's Cell and Blu-Ray technology.
In the end, it's all subjective. Let the silly fools buy their $600 system
Yep, point taken. I just got the feeling that some of these people don't read the articles or the interviews with Sony or it's competitors. I get plenty of information from a wealth of different sources, but even when a magazine like OPM or PSM puts a positive spin on certain things I have my doubts. I am a avid player of my PS2, I remember thinking it was the Xbox that was the evil multibillion dollar corporation that doesn't care about the gamer. Within in this past year however I've lost my faith in the heart of Sony's game department.
All of this said, I'm a major Nintendo fanboy, so you can probably go ahead and discredit anything I ever say.
Don't just pick out the little pieces of my argument you think you can combat and ignore the rest.
I simply chose to comment on what I was interested in. I wasn't purposely omitting things.
No, I don't read every article ever written about PS3. Generally I get all my gaming news from ign.com. Video games don't rule my life, music does. I'm interested in games, just not obsessed. I'd love to obsess over PS3, but with all my other interests, I don't have the time.
Brandname, all we can do is wait. Your theory and my theory will be proven or disproven in time. I doubt by then we'll even remember this silly debate. You like pc, I like consoles, who really cares? Like what you like and I'll like what I like and we'll get along just fine.

I was only stating the fact that the PS3 is, like most new consoles, overpriced and that it will come down in price soon enough. Lets also not forget the X360 is a darn sight cheaper with some fine games already. Get one right now if you want but my advice is to wait for the inevitable price drop or at least to wait and see what the games are like. That sounds pretty constructive to me. But hey, i could be a sheep like you - swayed by the hype and with no original opinions of my own. You've already made your mind up that you're going to get one despite admitting that you know little about the machine (by asking people for "details" about it). It's you who has no sense. Still, at least Sony loves people like you........

..Let me ask you something numb nuts... when will the price drop be? 1 year... 2 years? Im sure your crystal ball would know the answer, so empty wallet can save $50.00. The systems (xbox 360, ps3, and nintendo wii) are selling like hotcakes at the moment, and most likely won't be going down in price anytime in the near future. Are you also going to not drive til gas prices come down too? Who are you to say someone who buys a new console that is a technological masterpiece at a lower than production cost price has less sense? You obviously don't have much of an education, or money to make an argument like that. Based on your logic, I would have to wait 2 years til the systems drop in price, and to see what games there are... F no. I've got the cash, and I trust in both companies, so, therefore I buy. And by the way... the Xbox 360 is $399.00 BEFORE the HDD drive, which knocks it to $499.00 . (same price as a PS3 with a blu ray player)
