Several great games for the PS2 have come out that went unknown. Two examples are Katamari Damacy (the sequels are now a bit more well known) and Rez. What others do you think are noteworthy to tell about?
Only a few Japanese companies bother to do any advertising in the US (Square-Enix, Capcom, Konami, Nintendo, sometimes Namco), so any good game by anybody else from Japan is pretty much underrated.

Since you like Shin Megami Tensei, you should try finding a downloadable version of the original 16 bit on the internet.

Well...not so much underrated as it was "under-bought." It recieved good, if not, great reviews from magazines and website and did sell quite a bit, but not to its full potential.
I finally found Beyond Good and Evil at Gamecrazy for around $7, which is absolutely fantastic. I just rented Psychonauts, and while it doesn't have the best gameplay mechanics in the world, it is extremely clever, inventive, and original, with hilarious voice work.

I seem to have a knack for finding buried treasures. Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy was great for any Jak and Daxter Fan. Beyond Good and Evil was breathtakingly beautiful and a gas to play. Both of these were much better than The Getaway, which I couldn't even finish because it was so awful.
While I'm at it, Devil May Cry seemed way OVERRATED to me, but I digress....
