This may sound dumb but I wanted to see if anyone can give me any input on the ps3-pros and cons- I wanted to go buy one but I just wanted to get some info from someone who has it and maybe the 360. Any problems occur? any info would help - thanks

i wondered if the PS3 played PS2 games?? i heard it didn't...

I'm deciding on getting a PS3 in the next month too (blu-ray is a bonus). the new games on it should get better (MGS4, Resident Evil5). Anything else to know????

the girlfriend wants a Wii, but i don't want to go there....

I've got a 360, and a Wii, and a 40gb PS3 is arriving tomorrow (I got it free when I got a new mobile phone!).

I love my 360. Xbox live is superb, although it's better when you play against people you know because there are so many little bitches playing Halo, COD4, etc. they will cheat, they will moan, they will call you an effing noob and a faggot, and it kind of spoils your enjoyment. I tend to play without the headset so that I can't hear their stupid voices.

The 360 dashboard is fantastic. You can speak to your friends, send them messages, see what they're playing, all without leaving the game you're actually playing. Apparently the PS3's equivalent is piss-poor, and Sony keep promising to address it, but the word so far is late 2008.

The problems with the red ring of death haven't affected me (touch wood!) so far, but I keep my 360 and the power pack in plenty of space with nothing to block the ventilation. Don't know if that's helped or I'm just lucky, but one of my friends has sent back 3. He says the new one runs much quieter, but that wouldn't be hard. My 360's fan drowns out the combined sound of my projector and my laptop (got to love my carbon footprint), and I have it on authority that the PS3 is as silent as Airwolf in stealth mode.

The games on the 360 are far superior at the minute, so much so, that there is not one single game I'm really fussed about playing when I get my PS3. I'll probably search for Motorstorm and Resistance in the bargain bins or pre-owned, but I'm not fussed. Like I said, it was free, and means I have a blu-ray player. Even the cross-platform games are superior on the 360 just now, but you would hope the supposedly more powerful PS3 will look better once developers get used to it. As for the 360, there are so many great games, and plenty of bargains to be had because it's been out longer.

Jayman: some PS3s play PS2 games, some don't. The 40gb version I'm getting doesn't. The 60gb does (apparently) and the first generation PS3s do (although there have been all sorts of compatibility issues since launch, so only a fraction of PS2 games play perfectly). It's not a problem though. If I was really desperate to play a PS2 game, I'd get my PS2 out of the cupboard. It's hardly much effort.

As for my Wii, I bought it on launch day, and currently have 4 games for it (not including Wii Sports), 2 of which I got with it. I love Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxies, but apart from maybe 2 other games, there's nothing else I'm remotely interested in. Before Mario came out, I hadn't played my Wii for 6 months. Nintendo only cares about casual gamers and counting its cash now, so my love affair with the company has ended. The Wii is fun before you go to the pub, mind.

So those are my thoughts about it all. I'm off to play Half- Life 2 now.

Unfortunately, that kind of thing is highly pervasive in online games, whether console or PC. When I first started playing an MMO on the PC and started seeing what people typed in-game and/or hearing the words uttered over voice chat it felt like I was in high school all over again, a place I had long abandoned at least 5 years ago. Unsurprisingly, the age demographic for such games is peaking at the late teens I think.

To be honest I'm so sick of seeing the words "noob" (sometimes "n00b", "nub") it makes my eyes bleed.

Anyway, back on topic. The first generation 60gig Premium PS3 bundle is completely backwards compatible; the second generation 40gig and 60gig are not; the second generation 80gig is selectively backwards compatible (I have the 2nd generation 80gig).

Ugh… Tell me about it! The irony makes my blood pressure soar.

First off, half the kids spitting that slang probably haven’t known it’s meaning for no more then a year. Second, there is nothing more painfully embarrassing then someone who thinks they’re cool because they spend the majority of their life playing a videogame. Mad

Sorry, back to the topic.

Haha... do you know that the word "noob" and its variants even have different connotations as the spelling changes? Hilarious! For example...

If someone calls you:

1. Newb - You're okay. You're just new to the game. Short for newbie.

2. Noob - O.o Questionable. You're not a newb (see number 1), but you unfortunately suck at the game that you talk and act like one.

3. n00b (spelled with 2 zeros, not the letter "o") - an almost mild version of "Noob", sometimes used to poke fun at your online buddies who are going through a random idiotic moment.

4. Nub - the evolution of Noob, but definitely for the worse.

Haha! I happily didn't know that.

It will start really pissing me off when I see Noob or any of its variations printed on a t-shirt or bumper sticker. Years ago when I'd hang out on chat, it was just "Newbie" and the meaning was simple: you're new and generally not respected.

I always thought the progression of laugh out loud was hilarious itself, admittedly, I'd commonly use "lol" and occasionally resort to "lmao" but the list went on "lmfao", "rotflmao" and "rotflmfao". Then the next step I guess was to capitalize the abbreviations, and then, people started abbreviating the abbreviation rotflmao by just saying "rotfl" or "rofl".

All these terms have been burned into my retinas, such to the point that I almost started this reply off with Lol.

2nd generation 60gb? Y'what now? All 60gbs have been PS2 BC. Well, in the UK they were anyway.

If you have a 60gb PS3, almost every game you can buy in the USA is backwards compatible. The "compatibility problem" is really only with Japanese versions of games most Americans would not care about.

I have an original PS3 and have tried dozens of PS2 games in it, and they all play without a hitch. Every single one of them.
