I would recommend an 80 gig...but it depends on how much you plan on using the system.
As far as games I would pick up Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Oblivion, or NBA 2K8/Madden 2008.
If your wireless internet around your house sucks then get an ethernet cable to connect your internet directly to your ps3.

I think the 40gb system is really the way to go. I'd start by picking up Oblivion for the system, and quite frankly I just finished with Ratchet and Clank Future which I thought was really brilliant. If you plan on watching Blu-ray movies (Netflix subscription is the way to go) then I'd recommend going to Circuit City and picking up the Sony PS3 Bluetooth remote for $19.99. Personally I wouldn't pick up COD4, because unless you plan on getting your ass handing to you online for about a month or so before you get good, the story mode is pretty short.
Also keep some money aside for PSN games like Pixel Junk Monsters.

It really depends on what kind of games you favor. If you prefer FPS, then CoD4 is the right choice for you, but if RPG's are your thing, Oblivion will be the cake. Still, however, there is one game I really enjoy,Burnout Paradise, and even though it isn't the HIGHEST rated game based off of critics, you will enjoy it if you love fast paced racing. Now, about the accessories... there is one thing that you will need if you are planning to get an online game, and that is a headset. Really, it doesn't matter what kind you buy, but make sure that it is compatible with the PS3, and yes, listen to gft77. It is true that there are loads of downloads for the PS3 (demos, trailers for movies and games, add-ons, PS1 classics, $5-$10-dollar games, and several more. Hope you enjoy your PS3!

Thanks everyone... I picked it up a few days ago and I'm really enjoying myself. Motorstorm and Ratchet are sweet, although Resistance is incredibly underwhelming. Uncharted is glorious yet flawed due to it's length (50 bucks is not worth the price of admission for a game that only has 8 hours worth of playtime). Yesterday, I found Warhawk combined with a Bluetooth. So, I can't wait to sink my teeth into the online components of this black beauty.
