The word on the street seems to be that Xbox 2 will be available in the U.S. in late 2005, and that the PS3 won't even be ready for its Japan release until early 2006 (putting the U.S. release somewhere around Spring 2006). We all know that the PS2 got a HUGE head start in the current generation's console wars by beating the Xbox and Cube to the market. Is anyone else a little worried that Sony might miss the boat this time around by letting Microsoft release it's new technology early??? I'm hoping that Sony (which is in horrible shape right now, as a company) doesn't focus too much on the PSP at the expense of the PS3.

Yes, the Sony people are hiding the ball with developers on their development kits, but the June issue of Playstation Magazine does show some pretty amazing screenshots of a game called "Dark Sector" by Digital Eclipse, which is being made (obviously on a PC) with PS3 specs in mind. The trailer is pretty increcible, too.

I really had no ide Sony have postponed the PS3 release until 2006. That probably means it won't arrive in Europe until X-mas '06. This is not a wise choice - the ps2 is struggling enough as it is.
Unless Sony have something extremely out of the ordinary in store for us all, I'd say they're gonna loose this chapter in the ever going console war.

PlayStation 3 in 2005?

This week's topnotch gaming ditty comes to us in the form of a serious rumor with some legs with the PlayStation 3 being ready to hit store shelves in October or early November of 2005. Several high profile game content creators we spoke with did some checking with some of their pals who say that Sony Computer Entertainment is playing possum with the 2006 date and that a fall 2005 date might not be out of the question. Of course they are laying down a smokescreen with the release of the PSP at the end of their fiscal year in March 2005. Further investigation reveals that there will be as many as 25 titles ready for the system when it hits store shelves. Some of the high-profile games include a new version of Gran Turismo, Ratchet & Clank and possibly even a clone of Jak & Daxter. Coming from Electronic Arts will be the usual suspects, Madden NFL, NHL, NBA. Two notable titles that you might not have heard about are NBA Street and a new SSX title for Sony's next generation hardware.

Not to be outdone these same development guru's are talking Xbox Next as well. It seems when one company will release their next generation hardware the other two will fall in line like dominos. One thing is for certain, Sony Computer Entertainment knows its gaming history well and they know that they have to be the first one's out of the gate. They went back to back leading the way with the original PlayStation and then leading the console gaming category with the PlayStation 2. Up until that point no game hardware maker had dominated two hardware lifecycles let alone three.

For those of you historically gaming challenged Nintendo lead the eight-bit wars with the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega dominated with the Sega Genesis with the 16-bit and you probably know the rest of the story from there!

Im thinking that Ill only get one console from the next generation since Ill have a computer thatll be good for a few more years to come. Since the nearly all the good exclusives from Xbox have drifted to PC after a few months, Ill get PS3 if this trend continues.

All depends on the games, so weve got to wait and see.

Dark Sector is being developed for PS3 and Xbox 2. If Xbox 2 launches with a good number of quality games, then yeah Microsoft will get a pretty good edge on Sony. How much? We'll know in mid-2006. Wink

Hey, is anyone fired up that they'll be showing a playable PS3 at the 2005 E3?? I'm excited about it, but I'm a little disappointed that the PS2's life cycle will be so short. I think game makers still need to spend more time focusing on creativity rather than hardware and power.

I'm pretty sure the X-Box 2 will be more powerful, but PS3 will have more games, expecially in japan (like now, wit X-Box and PS2)

I wouldnt be so sure about the Xbox 2 having a really small library of games because Microsoft have managed to entrench themselves pretty deep in the console market so I think developers might be a little less apprehensive.

These "Sony vs. MS" debates always amuse me, especially when someone acts as if they work at one of these companies and have a stake in what happens.

Who cares? Buy the one that has the games you enjoy and just play.

Sheesh ...

wow, I had no idea about the arrival of PS3..See, my problem is that I don't even have PS2 yet..I have unfinished games, such as FF7 and FF8 because my PS1 was busted by a younger sibling..I really need to get on the ball with my systems!

Oh, and a question...does anyone think/know if PS1 games will be compatible with the new PS3 when it arrives?

I only have an Xbox right now. Now ps2. So, probably I will end up getting Xbox 2, even though Ps3 might be better.

I think I may try to get both. Take me a little while to make enough money with my crappy minimum wage job, but I will eventually get them.

I know what you mean...I used to ask for games and systems while in high school...but, now my parents think i should ask for more important things as gifts...besides, they are starting to get skimpy..

I think I might have to skip the next generation of consoles, but I might want to get one of the new handhelds (like the PSP, if they can extend the battery life). Looks perfect for flights, long drives, etc. I used to have the Sega Game Gear and LOVED it....
