I just picked up DQ8, and I'll probably be at it for a while, so I thought I'd create a discussion topic..

How do others feel about this game? I don't know yet...

DQ7 was a hugely retro game, with SNES-era graphics and NES-era battle system. That at times made it aggravating, but also seemed refreshing. And it had a charm that kept me interested until I got to a point where I was trapped somewhere that required tedious levelling and you couldn't get back to the class-changing place and I lost interest.

DQ8 has modern graphics while still having the same retro battle system. There's one big problem though. The thing that kept me most interested in DQ7 was the anticipation of finding out what new catastrophe would befall the next island. DQ8 doesn't have that kind of unique hook like DQ7 (For those who didn't play it, you would go back in time 100 years and stop island after island from being destroyed, then could go there in the present).

So, I guess my opinion of DQ8 will be based on if they manage to keep me interested in as cool a way DQ7 did.

err, i was not a member till i saw ur post, just finished validatin email. i have playd DQ8 about 4 times and each one for about 30+ hours at a time and i never got to the end (kept screwing up 1/2 way therw), but its a very captivating RPG? it will keep u busy for a wile, and fyi the 1st 7 hours of the game suck takes forever to lvl up till ur about lvl 8 or 9, then thell start come in nice and easy

i just want to say that i absolutely ADORE the Dragon Quest series! DW7 actually was the one that made me such a big fan, and it's the only PS1 game i still play. Overall, i do think that 7's plot is better than 8's, but the way they brought Dragon Quest up to date is so amazing that i have to love 8 more. Great, expansive world, so many items to find, so many colorful characters and so on. When i first played thru 8, i had hoped that they would update 7 like they did with 5, but that may take a while, if at all.
