Big Grin 1408 is one of the best horror movies in years and is also surprisingly one of the best movies of the year. This movie takes horror to a new level of eeriness and strangeness. While not frighteningly scary, it is a haunting and sometimes strangely fearful movie that includes some innovative and creative facelifts to old horror techniques. The use of photographic angles, darkness, and special effects are very effective. One of the most compelling scenes involves the concept of sound. John Cusack has the fortune of getting a great script along with amazing horror imagery that sets a horror standard much like Jaws (1975), The Exorcist (1973), The Shining (1980).

Have you seen the 1961 horror masterpiece, The Innocents?

No. Therefore, unfortunately I can't compare. Have you (Mark f) seen 1408?

No, but I'll probably watch it on DVD. I felt the trailer gave away a lot, but they all do nowadays.

The Innocents seems more parallel to the upcoming movie Jason (2007) that deals with a young boy whose eerie behavior seems menacing to his parents and baby brother.

1408 really stands out because I haven't seen anything or experienced quite like it before, even the movie you (Mark f) mention. It really has more of a The Shining caliber for its shock value and I'm talking about blood and gore, I'm talking about true cerebral, psychological, and hallucinatory tailspin kind. As for big screen versus small screen, I don't think it will make much of a difference if you have a decent home theater. But it will be interesting how it stands up when the year (2007) is over. So far it's my top pick for favorite movie.

I had to see this movie again! There was stuff I missed the first time through and the movie overall still had a powerful emotional impact on me. John Cusack's humor came out even more crisp this time around. The sound effects and editing are superb with the mail boxes and key holes and the darkened rooms. This is a MUST see for any horror fan or new filmmaker of the non-slash and gore subgenre. This movie is a educational textbook film on what the new horror movie will have to strive for.

A fascinating question begins to form from the idea expressed above regarding the emotional attachment to a particular actor and the corresponding experience in such a movie, particularly in this one where it's not some much will the star avoid failure, become successful, and get the girl. In a horror/thriller genre the stakes are so much greater that the more one likes a particular actor in a role that that actor performs decently, the more the audience has to lose in terms of the actor's actual death on screen so the fear factor could easily be increased if the likeihood of what is going to happen in the movie remains really unclear and death is possible.

I was on my way to a local 2nd run theater to catch wild hogs yesterday(july 4) but it was close4d, so i went to the big theater and I was gonna watch whatever film was the time range, thank God I picked 1408, I loved this movie so much, it is by far the most original horror film in recent memory, and John Cusack puts on a stunning performance, I've never read Stephen King's book or short story i think it was, but I cant wait to get my hands on it if its anything like the movie

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

Though I am a King fan, I've never read the story, but the movie was fantastic, right behind Ratatouille as the year's best.

You hear that Mr. Anderson?... That is the sound of inevitability... It is the sound of your death... Goodbye, Mr. Anderson.
