It's hard to believe that a Eddie Murphy, comedy horror thriller movie could actually be among the scariest films ever. By its very nature, such an idea would actually defeat and be at complete odds of the comedic component of the film. Having watched the movie, I found it quite good, except for the miscasting or misdirecting of Murphy. But really, really scary? No.

has anyone else noticed that most horror films lately lack the "horror"...haha i mean ok, the exorcism of emily rose was a good movie..but all these movies with unbelievable monsters and such just dont do anything for me...i prefer alfred hitchcock and the original twilight zone

Bram Stoker's Dracula with Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder...? I didn't really see it as a scary movie. More like an art film. I think it was a really good movie at that, though.

When I was around 12 years old 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' scared the hell outta me! My mom caught me watching it & changed the channel to BET where Billy Ocean's "Love Zone" video was playing. For years after that, whenever I heard that song, terror gripped my heart! I watch it now & I can't believe I was so freaked out by that movie! Now that I'm older, it's pretty much impossible for a movie to scare me at all. However, 'Darkness' with Anna Paquin, was extremly creepy. The ending was EXCELLENT!

"I can't live the buttoned down life like all of you! I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles! Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

O.K. I have officially been frightened by a movie, "The Descent"! I just saw it last night & I had NO sleep while it was dark! I was that freaked! Hadn't been that scared since I was 12!!!! The 'cave-dwellers' were just nasty, creepy, & vicious as Hell! If you haven't seen it, SEE IT!!!

Sorry if this has been mentioned...the "airplane" segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie, and the Dan Akroyd/car scene ("Wanna see something really scary?"). I saw that movie when I was about 7 or 8, and it literally haunted me for years to come. I still think it's pretty freaky, and the few times I've had a window seat on a plane ride at night, I can't help but peak out the window Wink

I would say "The Amitiville Horror" (|The ORIGINAL one- remake is pathetic), "The Changeling", also there is one Extremely Rare Russian Movie and I doubt that it was ever translated in English but this is the most scary one- as in Changeling- not a single drop of Blood but it is Evil, hunted and Amazing- in Russian this movie sounds like "Prikosnovenie" in English i would translate it as "The Touch" (not sure if this is the right spelling- the word means to touch some one)
I would rate those movies from the most scary to list: 1-Prikosnovenie, 2- The Changeling, 3- The Amitiville Horror.

I agree. I still think "The Exorcist" is the scariest movie of all time, but "Event Horizon" truly horrified me. I still get queasy picturing that final scene in hell. Man, I HATED that movie.

I've never been frightened by a movie, though two films did make me feel unsettled: The Changeling with George C. Scott and Peter Straub's Ghost Story.

The plural of "anecdote" is not "data."

I was very excited at first when Event Horizon (1997) first premiered but by the time I came out of the movie I was quite disappointed because unlike what I was expecting (a quality science fiction movie) and I ended up witnessing a movie transform itself into a horror movie right before my eyes and I couldn't except the transition and appreciate the movie. It would have been fascinating to wonder what my reaction would have been if I had gone into the movie expecting a horror film instead. Unfortunately, the movie didn't live up to my expectations as a science fiction movie and so I really didn't get into it after the half way point.

I have to mention The Innocents again, based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, turned into the most-beautiful, most-ambiguous, best-acted, -photographed and -directed horror film ever made. You may scoff, but I dare you to watch it in the dark without freaking.

I strongly feel that The Exorcist is the scariest movie of all time. What's even better is that it is such a good film. I had no idea that Stanley Kubrick was first asked to direct it and that William Friedkin was such a demanding person with the actors. I just learned that Ellen Burstyn suffered permanent spinal damage when she was violently yanked per a harness that was actually caught on film. Supposedly when she is screaming in pain, it is real pain as they kept shooting although she was really hurt.

How it did not win the award for Best Picture is befuddling.

If you were alive at the time, it isn't that befuddling. It was a fait accompli, even though at the time, I agree with you now. That still doesn't mean that The Innocents isn't the scariest flippin' movie ever made!!

I've seen a lot of horror movies in my day -- new, old, domestic, and foreign -- and still, NOTHING scares me like the opening of Jaws. The sense of hopelessness is very, very real. I have to cover my ears so I can't hear her screaming.

Well, Jaws gets my vote as the best film ever made, but even so, I believe The Innocents IS the scariest film ever, so please don't blow it off. It will screw with you until you're outta this place!!
