Im looking for a scary movie. Problem is, I grew up in the age where horror film is automatically associated with slasher flick. Ive tried my best and saw "Scream", "Exorcist", All M. Night Shyamalan's movies, "Psycho", "Evil Dead I and II", "Army of Darkness", "The Others", "Halloween", "Carrie", "NotLD", and "Dawn of the Dead".
Can anyone help me find a truly scary movie. When I asked my local independant film store clerk he pointed me towards "Rosemary's Baby".

Poltergeist (but I watched it when I was about 6, so I don't know if it holds up)
Suspiria - (italian!)
Evil Dead movies (funny!)
Psycho (classic!)
The Omen
The Lost Boys (but it's probably a bit dated now)
The Wicker Man
The Serpent and the Rainbow (for real zombies!)
Nosferatu (way classic!)
The Fly (is this horror? I don't know but a guy turns into a fly, so I'm counting it)
I wanna check out Nosferatu because its in my book of the 100 greatest movies ever made. Of course that books by Entertainment Weekly (who has the appropriate acronym EW!). But, since you suggested it Ill watch it. Doesnt it have a remake?
The Shining (scariest of all time) Halloween (an art-house classic) The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original) The Hills Have Eyes (early Wes Craven) The Hitcher (Rutger Hauer/C. Thomas Howell) Phantasm (flying metal balls with knives!)

OK, if nobody wants to respond to my own thread, then you can go ahead and not respond to me here.
"The Exorcist", whether you consider it a comedy or not, would have to disturb everyone; or did you just completely forget the masturbation with a crucifix/ incestuous cunnilingus scene? Gee, I realize that we have some underage posters, but I guess that's their parents' responsibility, not mine.
"Rosemary's Baby." So Eccentro, you don't believe your local video guy or me? Well, I hate to disappoint anyone, but there's no slice and dice, at least not literally. But I would imagine that demonic rape, not being sure if your paranoia isn't completely warranted or wondering who in the the hell (literally?) the father of your child is doesn't merit much in our jaded times. Oh, also remember, don't let anyone borrow anything from you!
"The Innocents." Let's see, a Victorian-era playboy doesn't have any time for his wards (the 12-year old son and 10-year old daughter of his dead sibling), so after two of his servants in the English countryside's biggest, scariest estate die in mysterious circumstances, he hires a possibly religious-fanatic, fortyish-but-gorgeous, virgin to be their governess. No biggie that she has no experience but learns that there was some S&M going on, and that the children "may be possessed by the former lovers." Hell no, that doesn't sound too interesting.
"An American Werewolf in London." This is the real deal, and if you really need gore and sex, well it delivers that in spades. But more to the point, it is witty, romantic, scary as hell and just unlike anything before or since.
Well, if you still need the disappointing standbys, OK, but why not live life on the edge and try these four flicks, the real deal?

I never said I didnt believe you that "RB" is a good flick I just havent gotten around to renting it. I, also, never said that I "needed" gore or sex. Where did you see me say that? Also, are you calling the horror films that Ive seen "dissapointing standbys"? Why are they dissapointing? theyre all great films in their own merit.
Eccentro, I am not trying to be confrontational; I'm just trying to give you more info. "RB" I mentioned because you mentioned it after I already mentioned it in my "Exorcist" thread. If you never saw that thread, mea culpa. My other responses have nothing directly to do with you, although I would admit that it would be nice if YOU watched them since this is your thread. My point was that EVERYBODY should watch them, just in case it might mean something to them. I'm not coming to these threads to show off or jerk off in public. I'll leave that to the politicians and celebrities. I would just like to do something as mundane and important as to improve ONE person's life, no matter what way that is accomplished.

Nosferatu is great ... just bear in mind that is a silent film from the very earliest days of film. SOme people might not be able to appreciate that type of movie, but if you do, then definitely check it out.
As far as a remake goes, there is "Shadow of the Vampire" with John Malkovich which isn't so much a remake as a fictional depiction of the making of Nosferatu in which the actor playing the vampire actually IS a vampire who has been promised he can drink his femal lead's blood if he plays the role for the director. It's pretty funny, not very scary. I actually liked it, but I don't think it would be for everyone.

Eccentro, the 1979 remake is called "Nosferatu the Vampyre". It stars Klaus Kinski and Isabelle Adjani and was directed by Werner Herzog. Besides being in color and adding a few things, especially at the beginning, it's remarkably faithful to the original.
I would start by watching Murnau's beautiful original, then try to get the German-language version of the remake (there's one in English too, but it doesn't seem as good), and then finish off with "Shadow of the Vampire".
I don't know if your local libraries have any good videos, but the last time I watched the original, I got it from my library.

Mark f, Exorcist and RB and other horror movies with religious themes have never scared me personally in the least because of their ridiculousness, the same way I feel about religion and monotheism in general, although that is for a different site! Eccentro, if you found Requiem for a Dream to be the most disturbing movie you have seen, I have some suggestions. Number One disturbing movie-Takashi Miike's Visitor Q! Absolutely the most disturbing film I have ever seen, more so than Irreversible and Boise-Moi(Rape Me), both French films, and not surreal like watching the Faces/Traces of Death series. Necromantik is a German movie that produces quite an uncomfortable feeling while viewing as you can imagine from the title I'm sure! Good luck!
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
Oh yeah, on that vein of disturbing movies, there is also Tetsuo, the Iron Man, a series of really bizarre Japanese movies. I found the one I watched to be unwatchable, but clearly some people like them.
It's awfully weird, all about people turning into metal or other metal related happenings that usually involve weird sexual things as well.
Anyway, if regularly scary and disturbing movies aren't enough for you, and you need something REALLY bizarre and highly disturbing, then I guess this is the movie for you (?) Or if you are a metal fetishist.
Tetsou:The Iron Man is very scary if you are an epileptic! It's like the Simpsons episode in Japan with the Battling Seizure Robots that send the family into twitching fits!

I saw the first two "Tetsuo: Ironman" flicks about ten years ago because my brother said that I had to. We still see each other a lot even though I told him that a little of it goes a LOOOOOONG way. One thing though; it is extreme but not scary.

First of all,S, I'm not sure that I've been scared by a movie ever. Oh well, maybe watching "Jaws" with a thousand people screaming and jumping out of their seats might count. My point is not to try to proselytize.
Let's say that everything that happens in "The Exorcist" and "Rosemary's Baby" is caused by people who believe as you do or are in a cult or who have a mental illness (these last two have nothing to do with your position.) Wouldn't that make the movie more realistic and scarier? Mental illness must be a reason for serial-killers because many explain that "they are on a holy mission."
My other comment is that I just watched again the almost perfect film, "The Innocents", with my daughter. Now I feel strongly about what happens in this movie, but the thing that makes it so awesome and scary, aside from the greatest b&w photography and sound effects of all-time, is that it is open to so many intelligent interpretations.
Also I have seen at least five of Miike's flicks, again at my brother's insistance, but somehow I've missed "Visitor Q" so far. Thanks for letting me re-bond with my bro. Later, Gator.

It was scary to me, but more so for the fact that it was in someone's head to begin with, than what was happening in the movie. That was just ... odd.
The most scared of a movie I have ever been was of ET when I was 7. I liked the movie, but then when I went to bed that night I got really scared that an alien would try to come live with me. And I didn't care how cute he was, I didn't want him. I couldn't sleep for about three days.

Now, maybe everybody will think that this is trivia or maybe I will be expanding their minds, but KT, have you turned 29 yet? I, for one, greatly appreciate all your honest comments during your "moderation." Please keep it up, since you are a breath of fresh air, not that I don't appreciate the other editors, but YOU really tell it like it is OR was, especially from a different perspective.

My birthday is in a month. You can send me presents via Metacritic.
Thanks for the props ... I just want this forum to be a place where people are free to say what they want as long as they say it with proper grammar, spelling and kindness toward their fellow enetertainment lovers. But it's nice that people appreciate it because I hate "moderating" people. I'd rather just have fun.
