What makes this one so cool is the story it is based on (see also: "Possessed" ) and the methods used in the production. William Friedken went out of his way to scare the living daylights out of pretty much everyone on the set.
The first sequel is one of the worst horror films I have ever seen but I actually thought III was quite good.

Silence of the Lambs will scare the hell out of you. I cringe everytime I see a picture of Hannibal Lector. I have not seen the other two but I plan on it.

Both are pretty chat, read the books instead.

Was that the dubbed Japanese "classic", "Attack of the Mushroom People"? I'll always remember the scene in the alley where the "killer mushroom" jumps out from the trash can. It was SOOO "scary", I almost died laughin'.

I saw the movie a couple of years ago but I actually think I remember that scene. That movie was so stupid and the plot was so bad, that it seemed to end up somewhat enjoyable.

I didnt find Dawn of the Dead THAT good. I thought it was surprising and "fun" at points, but overall the plot didn't really explain itself or make perfect sense and it really didnt have much of an ending.

I really like apocalyptic zombie flicks, so I'm partial to films like Night of the Living Dead (the black and white original may be my all-time favorite scary movie). In recent years, I've enjoyed 28 Days Later (which has some stirring scenes, including an empty London, and a cool soundtrack) and the remake of Dawn of the Dead (which improved slightly on the original)
One horror movie that I was surprised that I liked: Jeepers Creepers.
One that I thought was pretty much over-hyped and over-rated: The Ring. But I haven't seen Ringu, which I'm told is much better.
I should add, to the good list, Jaws and The Shining. Also The Exorcist and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (but not the unnecessary and not so good remake).
A borderline case (is it horror or mystery/drama) is the excellent Johnny Depp film From Hell.

Hmm. I thought the ending was the best part...the video on the boat was really cool. I'm not sure what parts didn't make perfect sense to you, but I didn't see any gaping logic holes. Where the zombies came from was not explained (as it was in 28 Days Later or Resident Evil) but I didn't find that to be a problem.

I guess it was sort of cool with the mixed credits but I dont know, it ended the movie on a different tone than I would've wanted it to. It didnt explain really about what the "zombies" were. People that died? How'd it get started? Im not saying it wasnt entertaining and fun, I just didnt find it to be that actually good of a movie. Nowhere comparisant to 28 days later.

Unless I'm brain-dead more than normal, there was never an explanation as to why the dead became flesh-eating zombies in the original trilogy (Yeah, something about radiation from a satellite?! Now, really!) I thought this "Dawn of the Dead" was better than the original, had a great ending and was much better than "28 Days Later" which petered out after a super beginning.

I would take Mario Bava's Kill, baby...kill as my favorite horror movie. The lighting is beyond amazing, as is the camerawork. How he came up with some of his shots I will never understand. Anyone else like this one?
