It's not going to win any awards, but for pure entertainment value, I loved the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Action from wire to wire, humor, sympathetic characters, and an amazing ending. Not nearly as campy as the first, and not as much social commentary (re: the shopping mall, consumer society, etc), just a terrific film.

But I should add that even though Polley doesn't work Eeker, it's still better than most of the other horror crap out there these days, especially the stuff along the lines of Scream & I Know What You Did.

Sarah Polley does work! She's the best part of the movie!

This was a decent remake, but whereas I will always own a copy of the original I can't see any reason to own the remake. Unless they add in all the gore and blood that was apparently left on the cutting rooom floor. If a Director's Cut is released I will be very excited.

What bummed me out about this movie is that the first 15 minutes or so (basically everything up to and including the credits) is fantastic and the rest of it is... well, not. Pretty dull and uninspired. Also, the original ending may have been a downer, but it left a milimeter of hope. Here the ending just seemed cynical.

Yeah, Dawn of the Dead was totally entertaining. Much less campy, and it had a cool 28 Days Later feel to it with the fast running zombies. I would actually recommend Dawn of the Dead over 28 Days Later. It was just so much more entertaining. More action, more comedy, and an equally cool look. See it.

The best part about both flicks (along with Cabin Fever and almost every other zombie movie) is how the scariest monsters are not the undead...but MAN HIMSELF! Insert scary mad scientist laugh here...

Seriously, I really like how the soldiers in 28 Days Later go from being welcome protectors to inhuman beasts in such a short, but smooth, progression. Same with the campers in Cabin Fever...the friends turn on each other lightning fast.

I met George A. Romero, and man he did not like the remake at all. I thought it was okay but didn't come close to the magic of the original.

I sooooo can't wait for the next dead movie from Romero....City of the Dead.

Yo I could be wrong but...isn't it called Diary Of The Dead? The film was shot in Toronto too, I believe.

I wasn't a zombie movie fan until "Dawn of the Dead '04"! Zombies just weren't a threat to me. They were slow & VERY dim-witted, the only way they could get to you was if you ran into a dead end.("Shaun of the Dead" made fun of this fact very well!)The '04 version made them a REAL threat! Making them run & strong was a fantastic idea! Romero may have created the idea but, Snyder improved upon it.

Alot of people have said that the remake slowed down during the mall sequences but, I guess they don't remember the original. It was a LOOOOOONG time until the heroes were in any danger, not until the bikers burst into the mall! In the remake, they were in danger getting into the mall, they had a few attacks after they were checking the lower level, a person turned after they were let in & they executed another just as they changed, there was the pregnant mother & her husband who caused all sorts of drama, there was Andy across the way, & so on!

The visual effects were also amazing. The use of amputees was brilliant! I know Romero's was a long time ago & times have changed, but, he still didn't do any better with "Land of the Dead". I was actually looking forward to it thinking, "this guy created the genre, his version HAS to be better!" How wrong I was. The make-up looked the same as it did in the original "Dawn", not good at all.

Also making the one zombie suddenly care for the others made no sense! Especially when he didn't seem to care for the zombie he burned up later. The last line of the movie was laughable. My friends still say it jokingly whenever someone expresses an annoyance at something or other. Romero may have been the king at one point in time, but, it's obvious he needs to hand over the crown.

For me, it's the remake all the way! Even the ending was wonderful to me. No place is safe!

P.S.
"28 Days Later" was NOT a zombie movie! They never died, they were infected with Rage. It was a movie about insanity not zombies. The soldiers had one of their own, who had become one of the infected, tied to a post to see how long it took them to DIE. Alot of people seem to make this mistake but, if you listen to the characters, you'll realize this isn't really a zombie flick! Still a fantastic movie though!

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

OK as a zombie movie. I can't stand this movie. The scary thing about zombies before was that there was just a mass number of them. So making them run makes them damn near impossible to beat (as far as the 28 days later, ITS NOT A ZOMBIE MOVIE!) I like it as a horror movie. And i don't understand why this is even considered a remake. the only thing that they have in common is that they are in a mall. I own it. But it will never hold up to the 1978.
