I wasn't a zombie movie fan until
"Dawn of the Dead '04"! Zombies just weren't a threat to me. They were slow & VERY dim-witted, the only way they could get to you was if you ran into a dead end.(
"Shaun of the Dead" made fun of this fact very well!)The '04 version made them a REAL threat! Making them run & strong was a fantastic idea! Romero may have created the idea but, Snyder improved upon it.
Alot of people have said that the remake slowed down during the mall sequences but, I guess they don't remember the original. It was a LOOOOOONG time until the heroes were in any danger, not until the bikers burst into the mall! In the remake, they were in danger getting into the mall, they had a few attacks after they were checking the lower level, a person turned after they were let in & they executed another just as they changed, there was the pregnant mother & her husband who caused all sorts of drama, there was Andy across the way, & so on!
The visual effects were also amazing. The use of amputees was brilliant! I know Romero's was a long time ago & times have changed, but, he still didn't do any better with
"Land of the Dead". I was actually looking forward to it thinking, "this guy created the genre, his version HAS to be better!" How wrong I was. The make-up looked the same as it did in the original
"Dawn", not good at all.
Also making the one zombie suddenly care for the others made no sense! Especially when he didn't seem to care for the zombie he burned up later. The last line of the movie was laughable. My friends still say it jokingly whenever someone expresses an annoyance at something or other. Romero may have been the king at one point in time, but, it's obvious he needs to hand over the crown.
For me, it's the remake all the way! Even the ending was wonderful to me. No place is safe!
P.S.
"28 Days Later" was
NOT a zombie movie! They never died, they were infected with Rage. It was a movie about insanity not zombies. The soldiers had one of their own, who had become one of the infected, tied to a post to see how long it took them to
DIE. Alot of people seem to make this mistake but, if you listen to the characters, you'll realize this isn't really a zombie flick! Still a fantastic movie though!
"I can't live the buttoned down life like all of you! I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles! Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"
