I'm curious to find out what the indie-cool position on Sheryl Crow is.

I have her s/t album at #65 on my 'favorite 100 albums'. Every time I look at it I think 'No way that deserves to be so high', then I listen to it and realize it really does.

Yet, she's super-mainstream and I don't think I know of any other audiophiles or critics who think that highly of her.

And, well...C'Mon C'Mon is blandly mainstreamy.

Maybe Crow should be ranked among bands like Coldplay who had one or two legitimately good albums then regressed into bland pop/rock? What does everyone else think of her? Do you think her new album will be as good as her s/t, or as bland as Cmon Cmon?

To refer to another recent thread..I'd bet her new album is a high contender for being sold at Starbucks.

I play tennis constantly and I take a 1-2 hour walk every day.

Just...I'm..currently looking for an after-graduation job. So, I have tons of free time to listen to music. Smiler

And actually, that #65 is based on a project I did in 2004 when I wasn't buying a lot of new albums....that I did gradually over the course of the whole year when I was bored.

I wouldn't put Sheryl Crow in my top 100. That being said, however, I don't mind her. As far as mainstream pop/rock goes, she's extremely competent. I've heard a lot of people bash her in here, but there's a lot of music that's plently shittier than Ms. Crow could ever dream of recording. I thought her cover of "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" on the Hank Williams Tribute was pretty sweet.

She’s an attractive woman who writes most of her own music and if given the chance can play a mean guitar. Honestly, why would anyone bash? It doesn’t have to be your cup of tea but you can surely respect it. I wouldn’t call myself a Sheryl Crow fan, but I’ll stop my radio surfing when I come across one of her songs.

Although Sheryl Crow wouldn't be in my top 100, I do agree that her debut is underrated and superior to her more recent releases. Lately, her albums are more focused on having a few "hit singles" and more filler than her first few albums.

She may not suit the taste of every listener, like me, I didn't liked her that much but if you will trully examine her compositions, the wordings are somewhat good. To those people who can and can't appreciate her there's just one thing we must admit, that she's a decent and talented woman.

As of right now I wouldn't put her in top 100 anymore either.

But..if I were making a 1997 best of the year list, she'd have a shot at the top ten.

Though...Cmon Cmon and Wildflower are giant leaps in the wrong direction. She's been sounding more and more like canned meat lately.

Yeah, she was probably my favourite singer-songwriter untill she Jewel'ed and came out with Cmon Cmon. I didn't listen to the new one. She's pretty much done. Still, her self-titled and Globe Sessions hold a lot of memories.
