"..there's only one damn song that can make me break down and cry" wailed Bowie, but he never actually told us what that song is.

So get out yer hankies and tell us about the song that chokes you up da most.

For me it's the song at the end of "Macon County line.

"When I met you it was my lucky day.
Sure gonna miss you when you go away."

Title and artist?

I couldn't find a blues section so I stuck this here.

People, commence blubbering.

It's hard to top "Wichita Lineman" which is as lonely as they come.

"Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin is a lump-in-the-throater.

And I've previously mentioned, in the holiday songs, a little ditty by Vertical Horizon called "The Man Who Would Be Santa" which, much like the Chapin song, is about the relationship between a father and son.

Performed in many versions over the years. The Glen Campbell version is, to my ears, the seminal one, but I've heard great versions by R.E.M., The Pearlfishers, Jimmy Webb, Freedy Johnston, and the Scud Mountain Boys.

"Second Avenue" (songwriter Tim Moore's original version, not Art Garunkel's sappy remake) used to get me going.

"this ain't smart, dude... this ain't art dude; this is sonic economics and i'll put it on a graph for you to prove"

The song I find to be one of the saddest, most depressing songs I've ever heard is, "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" by Carly Simon.

Honorable Mentions that are top of mind as I compose this note:

Fast Car - Tracey Chapman
She's Leaving Home - The Beatles
How Many Friends - The Who
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
Tracks of my Tears - Smokey Robinson
I Don't Want to Wait - Paula Cole
Livin' for the City - Stevie Wonder
In the Ghetto - Elvis Presley

That's a good list, asc85.

I just thought of one..."Alison" by Elvis Costello.

"...I know this world is killin' you..."

Fortunately for you, Megatron is here to provide a definitive list. It gets awful lonesome drifting through the darkness of space, and these songs sooth my weary soul:

TOP FIVE SADDEST SONGS, EVER
5. Willie Nelson “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”
4. Bauhaus “All We Ever Wanted”
3. Uncle Tupelo “Fatal Wound”
2. Big Star “Holocaust”
1. Hank Williams “Alone and Forsaken”

"No Surprises" by Radiohead.

There would be little point in posting the lyrics. It's the way that Thom Yorke sings each line and the beautiful melody that really hit you in the gut.

The best part of the song is towards the end when the tempo picks up a little bit, the electric guitar comes in, and Thom delivers the last mini-verse before the final chorus ("Such a pretty house/Such a pretty garden").

It's hard to explain the effect of this song. It's something you just really need to hear.
