So I searched the Rock forum for a thread on these guys to no avail. I figured it was high time that somebody (specifically Max Jack, Mark F, crazed or whoever) started talking about them. What are y'all's favorite albums?

So here's my lamebrained reply to myself:

I went to AMG, which seems to favor Jailbreak and Black Rose. I love Jailbreak - just picked up Black Rose and Chinatown yesterday, and I also have a copy of Johnny the Fox. but I haven't gotten to that one yet cos I've been too stuck on Jailbreak. I think pitchfork put Chinatown on its best of the 1980s list, but it seems Thin Lizzy was a bit more at home in the 70s.

I've also been keeping an eye out for (EDIT: Bad Reputation has Dancing in the Moonlight on it, NOT Renegade ), mainly because of the song "Dancing in the Moonlight." Incidentally "Moonlight" was my introduction to the band, from an acoustic version that Billy Corgan did which I listened to way back in the late 90s when I was tracking down SP bootlegs. Anyway, Billy's version isn't bad, but the Thin Lizzy version kicks way more ass.

Ditto with "Moonlight" and The Smashing Pumpkins for me. Mr. Corgan sure knows how to make a song sad and melancholy Wink so imagine my surprise and joy when I heard the original and how much it actually rocked!

I went on a big SP bootleg binge as well and have some real gems, which in turn, introduced me to a handful of songs/bands via covers (e.g. Never Let Me Down Again, Kooks, Rock On).

Anyway, not to highjack your thread or anything, V, but do you still have any SP boots lying around?

No problem. I think I still have a couple (one is the 1989 demos, and I can't remember what the other is), but they are in a box of tapes at my parents' house. I'll make sure to grab them the next time I go back there.

Now that I look at a list of SP covers it's shocking how many good bands I was introduced to by Corgan's whine:
Blondie
the Cars
Syd Barrett
Vic Chesnutt
the Cure
Fleetwood Mac
the Animals

Clearly Thin Lizzy could write amazing pop songs but they don't get enough credit in early heavy metal/heavy music. Listen to "Are You Ready" or "Killer on the Loose" and the guitar is as heavy as anything from Judas Priest around that time.

Vagabonds of the Western World is probably my top favorite Lizzy album (though there's a very nice comp of their Decca years on vinyl which I love just about as much). Killer tracks include "The Rocker" "A Song for While I'm Away", "Little Girl In Bloom", the title track and especially the cover of "Whiskey in the Jar".

Following that album, I like Jailbreak, Night Life and Bad Reputation the most. The '70s material was pretty top notch. I really didn't care for Chinatown or anything that came after.

Holy moses! I had completely forgot about ol' Vic. I loved "the Salesman & Bernadette".

I Saw Thin Lizzy in concert back in the 80's and they freakin ROCKED! One of the best concerts I've ever seen. I guess my favorite album by them would have to be "Johnny The Fox".
