You'll be hard pressed to find too many U2 fans on these boards. I think most members bought their first albums long after The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree revolutionized and revitalized rock music. They tend to judge U2 by their last two albums, and rather harshly at that.

I'm not enthralled with the new single yet. I will give them credit for going away from their trademark, reverb heavy sound.

I'm keeping my expectations in check for this one. I thought the last two albums were very good, but not outstanding albums. I'm not expecting that this one will be any better than the last two.

All that You Can't Leave Behind was very satisfying. ...Atomic Bomb... was highly disappointing.

I fear they're trying too hard to re-create their stuff from the 80s, rather than writing true, honest music that they're feeling within.

I have my doubts though, after a song released like "Get on Your Boots" which seems to be U2 catering to a young crowd. (I mean... Bono sings about "sexy boots"... he's old, he's gotta quit trying too be hip.)

I listened to The Joshua Tree (my favourite album of all-time) and War today, and I can hear the passion and sincerity in the music. I hope I can hear that on their newest. I certainly didn't hear that on this single.

Don't tell that to Bono...

Anyways, I'm pushing this thread back up, as I'm curious to see if anyone has downloaded/has thoughts on it yet.

Like fellow greats from the '80s R.E.M., I just don't find U2 all that interesting anymore. They've had a smattering of decent singles, but they really haven't made a cool album since Zooropa.

I don't know if it's just old age catching up with them, but what they now consider rockin', I consider sort of lame. The new single doesn't make me want to seek out the rest of the album at all.

The first four songs are all good-to-great. A very promising start to the record, and I actually started to get my hopes up that this could actually be another U2 classic.

Next two are underwhelming. I'll join that massive group of people who have no idea how "Get on Your Boots" became the first single. I think it's just their attempt to stay relevant and 'hip.' Sorry, not doin' it for me. (Though I do love the drum solo + "let me in the sound" part.)

More hits and misses throughout the rest of the album. "Cedars of Lebanon" is a good closer.

3/5

That's too bad. But, that being said, I'm still gonna buy it...

It's worth buying for any U2 fan.

I've been replaying the first 4 songs a lot. Good stuff. Too bad the middle falters a bit too much.

I REALLY liked How to Dismantle... when it first came out, but time has not been that kind to it. I hope the opposite becomes true with this album.

I think this album is pretty awesome - minus the fact that it sags a slight bit in the middle section, the first four and last four songs are all really good.

"Breathe" is my personal favorite. I'd say this record stands a good chance of making my top 20 by year's end.

I agree with you - No Line on the Horizon is surprisingly good.

I think latter-stage U2 is fine when they don't try to make their audience move. That's when things fall apart: "Vertigo", "Get on Your Boots", "Elevation". Man, all of those flirt with being deal-breakers. For me, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was never able to recover from the shock to the system provided by unfortunate-opener "Vertigo".

No Line on the Horizon not only provides some excellent songs to counteract lameass single "Get on Your Boots", they smartly put it in the middle of the album - sandwiched between No Line's strongest points.

Oh yeah, the other thing I love about this album is that it seems the Edge rescued his old delay pedal from collecting dust under his bed: some moments in some of these songs actually sound like classic-era U2. This makes me happy.

Couldn't agree more about "Get On Your Boots." When I heard it, I was disappointed and expected this album to be completely crap.

Instead, we were blessed with an album whose first single is probably the worst song - and yah, it certainly flirts with being a deal-breaker.

I can't stand the song in the middle of the album...it doesn't seem like it would have fit anywhere though, so I guess buried in the middle is better than up front at the beginning or falling flat as the last song.

This album is jockeying with Animal Collective for my number 1 spot this year...Animal Collective just don't have the kind of heart and soul that these lyrics feed me.

I don't think I'd put it as my #1, but it's certainly good enough to redeem U2 for me. I'd really written them off after How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. So much so, I don't think I've listened to any of their earlier stuff since then, either. But I'm giving their stuff a lot of plays again.

Personal favorite: The Unforgettable Fire.

Good to read some positive reviews. The last two U2 records left me wanting more, especially the Atomic Bomb album. I haven't heard the single yet, which I guess from what I read here, is a good thing.

I know I'll end up buying the new one, hoping against hope that it will be really good.

I'm liking this so far. I think comparisons to Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree are premature and ridiculous. I also do not see NLOTH as a huge departure from the past two albums, both of which I enjoyed a lot. But, U2 continues to make vibrant and relevant, if slightly less-than-exceptional, albums. It's enough to keep me interested and buying their albums.

Not a bad outting. The single was chosen primarily for the immediacy of that one riff, which will appeal to the masses right off the bat before it gets old. But thankfully that is actually the worst on the album, maybe track 3 is. There are some great vocal harmonies and truly magical moments on this one especially "Unknown Caller" and "Breathe". "Magnificient" should blow the roof off the stadiums during the tour. Vintage Echo delay Edge reappears, and Adam I must say has added some terrific bass lines as opposed to the bare bones root notes he's been fond of in the past.

Sadly, it looks like most critics can't get past the fact that this album features "Get on Your Boots".

This metascore is not accurate. There are at least two more five-star reviews of this album. Most are very favorable...I wonder what's taking so long for Metacritic to calculate?

I'm wondering why everyone is having such a hard time with "Get on Your Boots." Yeah, it's not the "epic" U2 single that everyone looks for, but it's certainly not bad by any means.

I personally chock up "Mysterious Ways" as one of their worst (most repetitive, bland) singles, on the otherwise incredible Achtung Baby
