I recently posted a thread on Tom Petty...now for my second favorite artist...NEIL YOUNG!!! NY is so powerful that I can't get enough. I recently bought his "LIVE AT THE FILLMORE" album and was blown away. Unlike seeing Tom Petty, I have not been fortunate enough to see Neil Young live. One day I hope. Has anyone out there seen him live? i need to hear stories...please...

I have to confess I haven't listened to much NY, as in the last record of his I heard was Ragged Glory and the last one I bought was Tonight's The Night - when it was first released.

IMO, Young shot his bolt fairly early in his career. I loved the stuff he did with Buffalo Springfield, and the two tracks he contributed to CSN&Y are that album's best. I also loved Everybody... and After the Goldrush.

After that, I had the distinct impression that I was listening to a few good ideas recycled.

However, when he gets guitar-heavy, it's difficult not to be seduced.

Pulque, why don't you rent this? The first half was Neil's newest album at the time, played in order and for the first time. The second half is similar to a Greatest Hits Concert. I bet you'll find it well worth a rental. Cool

I don't think you've listened to anywhere near Neil Young's entire catalog, Pulque, if you think he's nothing but a few good ideas recycled. He's possibly one of the most diverse artists who've lasted as long as he has. In fact, some of his unique ideas weren't really that good (see the 1980's). Of course, some of his material is similar to what's come before, but I don't think there's an artist you can't say that about to some extent.

I've seen him live several times, but unfortunately, all were outdoor amphitheater shows. Still great, with a lot of raw energy even in his late 50's (a few years ago). You definitely need to check him out crazyhorse.

You're certainly right about that, LD. My NY listening adventures peaked early, it's true. I only heard Ragged Glory because a friend (curiously, not a NY fan) bought it.

Still, I haven't been sufficiently intigued by his later stuff to seek it out and give it a fair hearing. My loss? Probably. Maybe hiring that DVD will revive my interest.

I hope you do that and check back. It really deserves to be watched twice. You'll love some of the first part and ALL of the second half the first time, but it'll definitely mean more to you if you at least LISTEN to it twice. (Watching it twice is better than just listening; Neil really gets very personal and tells lots of stories, so watching him helps make it honest.)

guy I know was visiting a friend in some small town. I do not recall the exact city. However, they were drinking beer and enjoying themselves. There was a small stage at the end of the room and the overhead stage lights came on. It seems that Neil Young and a couple of friends were passing thru and they played an impromptu set for the bar patrons. A guy has to be fortunate to luck into something like that.

I saw Neil Young back in the early 1980s and he put on a fantastic show. "Rust Never Sleeps" is probably my all-time favorite Neil though closely followed by "American Stars-N-Bars", "Comes A Time", "Harvest", "Freedom", "On The Beach" and this year's "Living With War". Haven't heard the new live set or seen the Heart Of Gold dvd either. With all the genre hopping the man does, I want a Neil Young surf instrumental/vocal album, please.

Has anyone listened to "Neil Young-Live at Massey Hall" that was just released? If you havnt do yourself a huge favour and go get it. Wow its amazing. As are pretty much all of his live albums. The special thing here is that most of the songs on the album that he does end up on the upcoming Harvest album. So at the timeof the recording, the audience was hearing htem for the first time. Pretty weird to hear "Needle and the Damage Done' or 'Helpless' and the crowd is silent becuase they are unfamiliar with it. All I can say is this is an amazing show. Listen to it.

Never been lucky enough to see him live, but I adore his work, and have stuff from the entire span of his career.

I'll always champion the grizzly ole Canadian.. Smiler

I haven't heard it yet, but Ben Wener, of my local paper, the OC Register, raved about it, saying it was up there with his best live albums, and he gave it an A, so I better check it out.

Yeah. Its amazing. Defeintely worth the A the OC register gave it. Now I'm just licking my lips waiting for the 8 CD/2 DVD box set of the first part of the archives. It'll be coming out this year. Check out this link if you havnt seen it already.

So after spending a good amount of time with Neil Young over the last two days, I thought I'd give this thread a bump.

What is the best NY album?

What is the worst?

Best live album?

Best live version of one his songs?

Feel free to profess your love or hate for Toronto's most famous musical export.

50 Euros? That's like 7,000 American dollars right? Ouch.

But seriously, nobody wants to share their opinion on NY (I'm looking at you s_s).

My favorite NY album is Everybody Knows This is Nowhere.

I think my favorite song is "Ohio," even though I've heard it a million times, but just knowing the story behind it gets me every time.

Not sure what the worst NY album is, but the worst one I own is Landing on Water. I got it free and will probably never get rid of it, but it is dreadful.

I'm not much of a live album fan, and particularly when those live albums are jammy in nature. So my favorite Neil Young album is the one that was just released last year, Live at Massey Hall, 1971. And there is a pretty sweet version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" which is about one third the length of the original.

Yeah, I do need to share my Neil Young opinion, MJ.

I actually bought my first Neil album last summer, and he very quickly became one of my favorite artists. This is kind of funny because I'd known many of his for years but just never pursued his records. I now own seven of his records.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
After the Gold Rush
Harvest
On The Beach
Tonight's the Night
Zuma
Harvest Moon

Obviously I've focused on his early career (I got Harvest Moon for $1 because it didn't have a case!) As far as I can tell, he basically didn't realese anything bad in the 70's (not counting Journey Through the Past) which pretty much puts him right up with Bowie for the best artists of the decade.

My favorite record of his? I'm taking Tonight's the Night. Favorite song is a lot harder. Maybe "Tell Me Why", "See the Sky About to Rain" or "Roll Another Number (For the Road)". This begs a question - does anyone have the same favorite Neil Young song? The guy has an incredible number of great tracks, so many that 100 different people could have 100 different favorite songs.

The next thing on my list of stuff to get from Neil are some live albums and Ragged Glory. I think that'll pretty much cover all of his best work, with anything leftover being a bit second-tier.

I'm happy. Hope you're happy too.

My favorite Neil album is Rust Never Sleeps. There's so many great Young albums it's hard to pick favorites.

Least favorite would probably be Old Ways. Just never took to this one.

I suppose Live Rust is the best live NY I've heard though I often don't buy live sets.

I do enjoy the live versions of "Powderfinger" and "The Loner".

So true. I was going to tell Sans that's the next one he needed to purchase.
