Roxy Music was one of those bands that always intrigued me. When I first joined the forums, I was familiar enough with their music to call myself knowledgeable but I was never, a 'fan.' I owe a lot of the credit to mark f, which continually brought up the band, mentioned them at every chance he could and spoke to me about how amazing he considered them to be. Now, I can honestly say that I love this band and that they are one of the most underrated, yet highly creative, influential and innovative bands of their time.

First, this is Bryan Ferry's band, period. He was the founder, the leader, the songwriter, the lyrics man, everything. The first two albums they did, with Brian Eno on "treatments," were terrific, for sure, but they caught fire on their next three. And many, yours truly included, would argue that that stretch of albums is one of the strongest runs for any band, of all time.

Richly diverse, vibrantly musical and above all, challengingly rewarding, they may be the best Art Rock band of all time. I've often caught myself listening to new music and hearing Ferry's shaking vocals, Phil Manzanera's screeching guitar and Andrew Mackay's howling sax in a lot of bands' music. If I had to pick a favorite album, it'd be Stranded, followed by Country Life.

If you can, most of their music was reissued on gorgeous vinyl. The first four albums come with awesome posters of the cover art and with those beauties gracing each cover, who can complain? Unbelievable band.

Question:
What's your favorite album by Roxy Music?

Choices:
Roxy Music
For Your Pleasure
Stranded
Country Life
Siren
Manifesto
Flesh and Blood
Avalon

I'm right with you Fraggie. I adore Roxy, and since my introduction to them was the Stranded album, I guess I'll vote for it.

But only cos you have a gun to my head. Any of the first three will do the job. Smiler

I completely missed these guys until relatively recently; since all I heard in my early years was that damned Avalon song and I avoided them since. I had no older brother to shake their head pityingly at my ignorant dismissal of them and hand me one of their Brian Eno era records.

I stumbled across Country Life and loved it (still do) but soon came across the earlier albums and "For Your Pleasure" soon became my fave, not just re Roxy Music but generally a fave album. Great stuff - needless to say FYP got my vote without hesitation.

Good to see some Roxy action on here!

Either For Your Pleasure or Stranded (both 1973, wow). The former has "In Every Dream Home a Heartache"; the latter has "A Song for Europe": my top 2 Roxy songs. On balance, I'd choose For Your Pleasure, not because Eno is on it (I'm not an Eno snob) but his 'arty'/experimental aesthetic really boosts the album ("The Bogus Man"; "Dream Home"; "For Your Pleasure"). Oh, and Morrissey loves it.
