Flower Travelin' Band and Magma are awesome. They need to be mentioned somewhere on the board.
I've already ordered a few cds because of this thread and dammit now I'm finding more.

One krautrock album I've always wanted to get my hands on for the longest time is Tapes by Faust. I downloaded it (I had to, but I'm buying it online when I get my visa), and it is tied with IV for my favourite Faust album.
I'm also super happy that Amon Düül II albums 4-6 are re-released. I think their first 6 album are classic.
Other krautrock bands I also love are: Can (duh!) Kluster Cluster Popol Vuh Neu! Ashra (a couple albums) Ash Ra Tempel (only a couple albums too)
"Somewhat" krautrock bands I also love are: Kraftwerk Tangerine Dream Klaus Schulze
I still need to check out: Agitation Free The Cosmic Jokers Amon Düül Dzyan

This is actually a Popol Vuh album.
Oops, I don't know why I put that under Ash Ra Tempel. But yeah it is a great album, third favorite of theirs behind Hossianna Mantra and Coeur de Verre which are both amazing.
Hello folks. I am surprised that nobody mentioned the group Krokodil. I have their self titled LP on Liberty and always thought it was one of the best of the early German rock bands.
Oops NEVER MIND Krokodil are Swiss and their first album was released on the German Liberty label. Sorry about that!

Great list! And I agree about the albums needing reissued, especially- from all I've heard- the Baba Yaga record. And I've been meaning to pick up at least one Gila album, so maybe your list is the push I need.

There is a lot on that list that I've never heard. I'm a little wary of the stuff he labels "jazz rock" though. It also begs the question, What is the difference between jazz-rock and Krautrock? I generally have a mild aversion to jazz-rock fusions, and I don't want to get stuck with anything I might find annoying.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to label the stuff fusion, I'd say it's definetely still progressive rock, possibly with more of a jazz influence, but I don't think those bands go into Zappa territory or anything. (Though I do love Zappa)
Also, I think it was on my list earlier, but I encourage everyone to pick up the album Malesch by Agitation Free , I've been listening to it quite a bit lately, it's really a great album, underrated in my opinion.

So I just picked up Osmose by Annexus Quam, it is very very good. I've only listened to it a few times, but I'd say it's one of the better kraut albums I've heard. Pretty heavy psychedelic and some great flute and percussion sections. I'm surprised it hasn't been talked about more than it has.
The tag Krautrock is like any other - fraught with technical ambiguities and whatnot. For starters, I would suggest listening to Faust's self titled, Ege Bamyasi or Tago Mago by Can, or Tanz der Lemminge by Amon Duul II. Or if you're confused by why Kraftwerk often gets lumped into the same camp, listen to some of their earlier stuff like Kraftwerk 2 or Rolf and Florian. They went total electro-pop in their later years, and it doesn't really mesh with the "kraut" sound, if there really is such a thing.
