I listen to a local rock show on the radio that specalizes in psychadelic rock from the 60's.

I was wondering if anyone out there could reccomend a good comilation or box set that would be a worthwile buy?Covering a lot of ground and such.

I will do some homework...but would love to hear someone elses opinion!

As ever, Rhino is a good place to get started, Imprezu21. Though, in this case, I would say good rather than great.

The various incarnation of their Nuggets collections are the best collection of psychedelic rock that comes to mind immediately. They've been putting these collections together since the mid-80s, culminating in a four-CD collection.

The reason I say good rather than great is that there is a lot of key music missing even from the four-CD box. I would suggest starting with their original Nuggets Vol. 1, which gives you a good overview that you can supplement with some of the key albums from The Beatles, Hendrix, and The Byrds to name-drop only a few.

LT hits the nail on the head, Imprezu.

The second of the Nuggets boxes focuses on British 60's psych rock. It's good, particularly if you like 60's style mod pop (like the early Who and Kinks, etc).

The first of the Nuggets boxes focuses on the American bands (mostly) and has some great songs. I recommend both, but I'll second LT's recommendation for the first one as the starting point.

There's a single-disc Best-Of called "Nuggets from Nuggets" that compiles the cream of the first box set. Here's Amazon's link to it:

That might be the best, cheapest way to start.

There's also a very cool book by Jim DeRogatis called Turn on Your Mind: 4 Decades of Great Psychedelic Rock that covers everything from the 60's to psychedelic hip-hop and electronica.

I love psych from the 60's and early 70's. The Nuggets comps are very good. I also like the Psychedelic State series that Gear Fab issues. The Psychedelic Crown Jewels series is excellent and I'm planning to pick up Psychedelic States: Indiana In The 60's soon.

For those who want to dig deep into the psych vaults, the Psychedelic Pstones cds of UK psych are very much worth hunting down. Bomp records carries a lot of these great collections.

Nuggets chief rival and probably better in featuring obscure songs (though not in sound quality) is the Pebbles series. A 28 volume series that first appeared on vinyl, most of it has been transfered to cd. But even the songs with poor sound transfer have a fun raw edge that's to die for.

There's quite a few excellet comps that mix psych, garage and beat, such as Nick Saloman's That Driving Beat series, Chocolate Soup for Diabetics, various Nederbeat collections (Dutch beat/psych/garage/R&B) and the Love, Peace & Poetry series which highlights psych & garage from all over the globe, one region per album.
