It's probably obvious if you check out the posts what many people's answers are. The rock band that had the most influence on the plurality of people alive today, including me, is the Beatles. I realize there's plenty others to choose from the old school, and what I say is only an opinion, but it's probably about as close as an opinion can get to a fact.

Currently, Radiohead seems to be following an arc of creativity which only the Fab Four have traversed so successfully. I'm definitely not one of those who thinks they are going backwards or even sideways. Their accomplishment in the face of ever-higher expectations (from both sides of their fans) is inspiring to me, at least. I have several other faves but I've mentioned them enough elsewhere.

I am really getting into "The White Stripes". They aren't the GREATEST rock band of all time. But, that wasnt the question. I believe they are as diverse as they are brilliant. Some other current favorites of mine--- Queen, Beatles, Modest Mouse, Oasis, Flaming Lips, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

I'm definitely into Kait-O right about now. Both of their albums are solid. Great live shows, and they have a sort of punk/pop sound that goes down easy.

I dig this band. In the "punk continuum", KaitO would really be further toward the no-wave end than the Green Day end, although they do find a way to make art punk catchy.

My favorite rock band is of course Mclusky if you've been following my posts. Mclusky have the right mix of hardness, humor, and catchiness.

More good rock bands:
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin
Guns and Roses
Aerosmith
Rolling Stones
Skid Row
Bardo Pond
Grandaddy

Steely Dan is on top of my list, they moved into jazz as they progressed but at first they rocked.

Other favorites are: Pixies, Radiohead, R.E.M., Wilco, Beatles, Who...

I'm gonna have to go with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Everyone of their songs continues to amaze me. Several of their songs are nice, light rock but then others get into funk rock which I really like. Some of my other favs are The Beatles, REM, Coldplay, AC/DC, Sublime, Nirvana and The Ramones.

A lot of the rock bands I enjoy seem to only interest me for a few albums, and then become redundant. I love RHCP from the beginning up to Mother's Milk, BSSM had some good tracks, but was the end of the line for me. AC/DC for any album with Bon Scott, Brian Johnston just never did it for me personally. I enjoy Kyuss quite a lot, Blues For The Red Sun being an essential album in my mind, and I have quite enjoyed all the Queens of the Stone Age albums. I guess Led Zeppelin and The Beatles must be mentioned. GNR's Appetite For Destruction remains a rock classic. Hmm, how about Little Feat? They mix it up a bit, but are still essentially a rock band. Can't forget about CCR either!
However, my favorite rock band, and most likely my favorite band too, is Ween! Over the course of 8 albums and a couple of live discs, they have shown themselves, in my opinion, to be the closest thing to the Beatles today. They have continually progressed, aren't afraid of humourous, tongue-in-cheek lyrics or cover songs(just like the Beatles), and they even have their own White Album, White Pepper! They have two main songwriters, both of whom can sing, although one handles most to all of the vocal duties these days, and they can easily move between light hearted and seriousness. The one major difference is that Ween is an absolutely killer live band, far superior to any band I have seen in my life. On top of that, they have their own on-line radio station that plays requests, and allows anyone to make their bootlegs available for play on the station! Want to hear that version of Booze Me Up and Get Me High they did in your town, get Weenradio! Also, Ween fans are incredibly dedicated, just like Beatles fans! Enough of my ravings, long live the cult of Boognish!

i started out with Let it Be. ive listened to it many many times and it still hasnt gotten old. After that i got Pleased to Meet Me. Its nowhere as good as Let it Be, but not bad. The production really doesnt fit the music and it has a few mediocre songs on it ("Shooting Dirty Pool"?). It has enough good moments that I like it. Next I got Tim. I only got this a few days ago (and with a few other cds) so I cant say too much about it but so far I'm liking it a lot. Is there any other Replacements stuff I should get?

Well, you've got the best three right there, but I wouldn't dis any of "Pleased to Meet Me" too soon. I also like "Hootenanny" and the later albums. Heck, I like all of 'em. I think the Replacements are tied for first as the band I saw live the most (four times.) I envy you your new-found love.

well i think i sort of overlistened to pleased to meet me. It has a lot of their catchiest songs but it sounds more conventional than Let it be or Tim. I like it but not as much as the other two. there is just songs on it that really dont appeal to me at all. Ill check out "hootenany" next. i also have this Paul Westerberg album I got for free ("come feel me tremble"). I havent really listened to it tohugh. ive been meaning to.

Me, too, robot. I worked in a record store the year it came out and it was never far from the turntable. I've not grown tired of it to this day.

Tim has always been the critical favorite from the Sire years and it's great, especially the brilliant, but crashingly sad "Here Comes A Regular." Personally, though, I come back to Pleased To Meet Me a lot. It's hard not to love the Big Star tribute "Alex Chilton."

The strength of Paul Westerburg's post Mats catalog is without question, but drummer Chris Mars' solo debut Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is sorely overlooked, largely underappreciated, and sadly out of print. I see it used on CD pretty often, though, so keep an eye out for it.

a few months ago I read an article about Chris Mars and his paintings in an art magazine. Its cool that he went from respected musician to respected painter.

While Mars' artwork is not my personal cup of tea, I think it's well done and admire the career he has made for himself in that world.

As I think about it, though, more than a few musicians I admire have shown facility on other visual and lively arts. On a personal level, my sister-in-law holds a graduate degree in music composition from Yale, but has more published work as an illustrator than a composer. Tony Bennett's paintings are well-known, if not particularly inspired. Both Chris Issacs and Tom Waits have done well on the silver screen.

On the other hand, did anybody ever read Pete Townshend's collection of fiction, Horse's Neck? Where's my copy of Quadrophenia?

I accidentally stumbled onto this. I thought it was still about what was said two posts ago. First off, I enjoy all the post-Replacements' albums, especially ALL of Mars' and Slim's first.

I haven't paid attention to Mars' artwork, but one rock guy who seems to REALLY be an artist is Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets. When he started out, you might have considered him an amateur artist, but it didn't take long for him to perfect his "non-musical" skills.
