..I was all set to buy it, but then I heard them play on SNL. It was like...a cut and paste of Californication outtakes, with a bunch of really jarring guitar solos pinned on.
...Is this album worth picking up?

I haven't heard it but I'm still gonna buy it. i saw the SNL stuff too and thought that the Dani California tune was interesting but the jarring guitars only became noticeable on the Give It Away ('91, wow, thats been a long time) work out and they appealed to the metal guy in me. If anything the SNL gig reminded me of the live power of this band.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Anthony's terrible performance yet. I watched SNL, and he screwed up Dani Califonia something terrible...he couldn't stay on key to save himself, and left John hanging because he forgot to sing the falsetto part in the middle.
Update: I bought Stadium Arcadium on a whim, listened to it for two days, and sold it back to the store...pick up one of John's solo albums instead - I've never been disappointed with any of them.
I love it personally. I think it's a brilliant album. I mean it just flows (if that makes sense). I think it really showcases RHCP's abilities to play anything.
I think Stadium Arcadium is awesome! There are plenty of good songs here like "Strip My Mind," "Made You Feel Better," "Slow Cheetah," "Snow (Hey Oh)," and much more. When I first saw the release of the album, I saw 29 songs listed and thought it would be quantity over quality, but there are actually many songs to tide you over. Worth getting.

I'm curious what some of these guys would have to say now about the album. Particularly considering the "Dani California" "Last Dance with Mary Jane" debacle. I liked the Chili Peppers when they were an actual punk band, their last decent album was good though, Blood Sex Sugar Magik released so many years ago.

I was a big fan of RHCP in the late 80s/early 90s. I think Mother's Milk and the aforementioned Blood Sugar Sex Magic was really the apex of their career. They did decent work through Californication, but now they seem to be kind of going through the motions.
I actually heard Mother's Milk's "Knock Me Down" the other day and it reminded me what a great band the Chili Peppers once were. What an excellent tune. That song had some soul!
----- I’ll be Ben Gazzara, you’ll be Gena Rowlands.
