Little people know how much Dylan set the standard for rock...with his performance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival when he came out with a rock band, played three songs over boos, and left...
Thats what rock and roll is all about...

Eriq, I never said or even implied that he was "solely" a folk artist. I don't deny Dylan's impact and influence on rock, but I would not consider him in the "greatest" category. I consider his best early work, and great albums like Blood on the Tracks to fit in the Folk/Americana/Singer-Songwriter/Roots music categories, and agree that he has rocked at points in his career, but not enough compared to the scope of his own work to put him in this category. I think some regular sized people know about Newport as well Urban! Nice list Chilliwack!

I think that the argument you gentlemen are having is based purely on your defining boundries of what constitutes rock.
If you are a "rock the supergenre" kind of person (as I am) you tend to give props to things like influence, longevity, experimentalism, and place within the greater cultural landscape.
So your average top five may include the beatles, velvet underground, bowie, dylan, pixies, pink floyd, radiohead (nod to the modern), U2 etc. (I personally hate U2)
If however you choose to view rock as "specific genre" then you tend to disregard most things that don't fit as specifically into that frame (guitar driven). I would say this tends to be people who like harder rock and are more interested in great songs than great albums. That's not to say however that they judge music less intensely, just maybe less broadly.
the average top five may include sabbath, motorhead, metallica (up to load), zepplin, acdc etc.
Then I feel that bands that both rock interesting (supergenre) and rock hard appear on both lists. ex: Who, stones
It's true the official rock and roll judges of the universe told me so........ Or maybe I just made all this up.

Now I'm basing my choices on sheer talent of individual members in band and cohesiveness of members to create overall awesomeness and greatness of band.
1. Led Zeppelin-Robert Plant:arguably the best vocalist of all time. Jimmy Page:arguably the best guitarist of all time, John Bohnam:arguably the best drummer of all time, and John Paul Jones: no slouch on the keyboards or bass. And they could write a friggin song!
2. Pink Floyd. Just amazing in every way.
3. Metallica. I don't care what anybody says, you take James, a hell of a vocalist and guitarist, Lars, arguably one of the best drummers ever, Hammett, arguably one of the best guitarists ever, and well which ever bassist they had, Newsted kicked ass and you've got one of the greatest ever.(first 4 albums only, the rest is pure, utter garbage.)
4. Beatles. Nough said.
5. A tie between Nirvana,Alice in Chains, Radiohead and Pearl Jam. Sorry if that's considered cheating.
1- Whatever band Little Richard used to have. (I know that's gonna drive Bobthespirit nuts- but that band from the early to mid-50s was the most rockin' thing I've ever heard.) 2-Faces 3-Clash 4-Minutemen 5-Booker T. and the MGs- doesn't matter who is fronting them.
Take it easy... ...but take it

1. Pink Floyd - the proof we don't ever get old 2. Rage Against the Machine - my life makes sense after all 3. Joy Division - huge scream, pure expression 4. Sonic Youth - my youth (obviously poetry) 5. The Smiths - truth and depht
These are the bands that touch me the most. I adore them for several different reasons, connected with my personal life and the world history of the past 50 years or so.
I'm 41 - does it show? Please email me if you understand: pedro.sousa@fcsh.unl.pt

1.) Radiohead 2.) Springsteen 3.) Pink Floyd 4.) Rolling Stones 5.) I can't decide. It's one of these: Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop (both solo and with Stooges), Wilco, Flaming Lips, Will Oldham (and all his monikers), 80s-early 90s U2, and the Microphones.
Originally posted by UrbanJesus: No I know bands like AC/DC and the Ramones may rock harder (in other peoples opinions) then these true classic rockers...but the bottom line is, Angus Young was probably playing in his garage with some of his high school buddies covering songs like "Like a Rolling Stone", "Highway 61", "Rainy Day Women", and "All along the watchtower" which Dylan had written a decade before...and are undoubtedly some of the greatest rock songs ever written...
Dont get me wrong, but AC/DC rocks and they rock hard...but you have to give credit where credit is due...
The problem here is Rock is too broad a genre to classify 5 greatest bands...but the entire genre of rock wouldnt be anywhere without the likes of Dylan, Zappa, Reed, Berry, Hendrix, etc...
And dont even get me started on Longevity...
I would also like to say that I understand why you like AC/DC and other such bands better then guys like Dylan and so on...but you shouldnt make accusations about them until you know what you are talkin about...everybody has thier own opinions...but a lot of people have a problem seperating their favorites from the best...
EVERY band in the world when it starts it's playing covers of other bands. That's natural. Do you believe that Dylan didn't play songs from other bands? Well Dylan make whole albums of covers a thing that AC/DC never did. In my opinion AC/DC is the greatest rock n roll band. The songs are great so this is the simple reason I like them.

So everything is rock then. BBC Halloween Sound Effects 3 is now a rock album because Futureshop couldn't care less about music. I was still running under the assumption that the "Rock" forum was "for classic rock or mainstream rock bands only" but I guess if Bill's Department Store has Aphex Twin under rock, he must be rock.

2. Rolling Stones (showed how you could turn ripping off the Beatles into a 40 year career)
these two bands have completely different sounds. Do you honestly think "Exile on Mainstreet" sounds even remotely like "Sgt. Peppers..."?
No, but "Their Satanic Majesties Request" does. Fuck the Rolling Stones. I've got interviews where Lennon talks about how the Rolling Stones coppied their career path until the Beatles broke up when Mick decided to run around bashing the Beatles to anyone in the press who'd listen. That guy's a total whore of a tool. Have you seen that pathetic insurance company concert commercial with 40 year olds crowd surfing? DIE ALREADY!!!
What an idiot! So yoru telling me, that brown sugar, jumpin jack flash, start me up, soound ANYTHING remotely like anythign teh Beatles created? The Stone used a lot more blues in their music, than the Beatles did, and Jagger ha d aharsher voice and the stone sin general created much harsher and gritier rock tunes..Your a twat if you think that teh Stones ripper off The Beatles.
I don't know about the top 5, it's hard to get a list that small.
But here are some artists I love who people havn't listed:
Alice Cooper- This guy along with Mc5 influenced the whole Detroit rock/garage sound. If ya don't believe me listen to under my wheels. Alice also influenced Kiss, and pratcially every hair metal band that followed.
Billy Joel- Does he count as rock? Whatever, he's an amazing lyricist and piano player, he uses a lot of social elements in his songs, and I am sure he influenced a lot of singer/songwriters. I am sure people like Marc Cohn, John Legend are influenced by his works.
Aerosmith- Aerosmith's 'Toys in the attic is one of rock's greatest albums and although they turned rathe rpoppy late ron theyre achievemnets in bluesy rock, and in grittier harsher rock sounds like dude looks like a lady and love in an elevator stand up to the Rolling Stones start me up and brown sugar.
Triumph- Yes, the band that along with yes created prog rock. They were just fogotten.
Nazareth- Yes, Nazareth. They fused hard rock and blues and created a sound that Led Zep and Deep Purple would be proud of
Rainbow- Rainbow and Ronnie James dio created soem of har rocks greatest music. trust me, they were just as good or better than Deep Purple.

Amazing response!!! In honor of your tact, understanding, and depth, I hereby announce that all forums are closed forever. Why should anyone try to match your wit and wisdom in the future when it is simply not possible? It is only fair that your post be the last post to ever grace the forums of Metacritic!!!! (Except for mine of course. Somebody has to be the Dennis Hopper to your Marlon Brando.)
