Here's two groups noboby has mentioned, probably for good reason. To begin with, they recorded more than thirty years ago and weren't very well known even then. But I liked them both more than a little.
Stone the Crows (featuring Maggie Bell) and Robin Lane and the Chartbusters
Does anyone remember or know of these?
***two more came to mind (edit) Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll & the Trinity and Fairport Convention (it's first incarnation)
OOPS! thetreesgetwheeledaway did mention Fairport Convention. I just missed his post
So I'll trade Fairport Convention in for Belly (of Feed The Tree fame), Zuzu's Petals and Mazzy Star

No love for Helium, with the beautiful and multitalented Mary Timony?
And has no one mentioned ABBA?? You know you love them.
Some other ones that just came to mind: Cocteau Twins Talulah Gosh/Heavenly/etc. Renaissance The Gathering Over the Rhine Bikini Kill/Le Tigre Tiger Trap/Softies/etc. LiLiPUT X-Ray Spex (talk about an underrated band!)
Sleater-Kinney Hole Garbage Fleetwood Mac No Doubt
the original poster and the Evanescence thing was funny. they are totally gay. Amy Lee should go solo and release an album of her singing with just a piano. Now that i can get into.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think so. Their '80s stuff was good, but their '70s material, like Crazy on You, Barracuda, and Magic Man was amazing. Ann Wilson could belt out a tune, and Nancy was pretty good with the guitar too.

Mark, what're your feelings on Cut by the Slits? Maybe it's just because the time periods and females, but The Raincoats and The Slits go hand-in-hand for me.
I have to be honest with you about the Raincoats/Slits. I had a friend who was serious about the Raincoats, so I got into them. Neither one of us took the Slits that seriously. I mean, we saw the album cover, but we almost took it as a reason NOT to take them seriously. That means that I STILL have to catch up to the Slits as a musical entity.
