Here's two groups noboby has mentioned, probably for good reason. To begin with, they recorded more than thirty years ago and weren't very well known even then. But I liked them both more than a little.
Stone the Crows (featuring Maggie Bell) and Robin Lane and the Chartbusters
Does anyone remember or know of these?
***two more came to mind (edit) Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll & the Trinity and Fairport Convention (it's first incarnation)
OOPS! thetreesgetwheeledaway did mention Fairport Convention. I just missed his post
So I'll trade Fairport Convention in for Belly (of Feed The Tree fame), Zuzu's Petals and Mazzy Star

No love for Helium, with the beautiful and multitalented Mary Timony?
And has no one mentioned ABBA?? You know you love them.
Some other ones that just came to mind: Cocteau Twins Talulah Gosh/Heavenly/etc. Renaissance The Gathering Over the Rhine Bikini Kill/Le Tigre Tiger Trap/Softies/etc. LiLiPUT X-Ray Spex (talk about an underrated band!)
Sleater-Kinney Hole Garbage Fleetwood Mac No Doubt
the original poster and the Evanescence thing was funny. they are totally gay. Amy Lee should go solo and release an album of her singing with just a piano. Now that i can get into.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think so. Their '80s stuff was good, but their '70s material, like Crazy on You, Barracuda, and Magic Man was amazing. Ann Wilson could belt out a tune, and Nancy was pretty good with the guitar too.

Mark, what're your feelings on Cut by the Slits? Maybe it's just because the time periods and females, but The Raincoats and The Slits go hand-in-hand for me.
I have to be honest with you about the Raincoats/Slits. I had a friend who was serious about the Raincoats, so I got into them. Neither one of us took the Slits that seriously. I mean, we saw the album cover, but we almost took it as a reason NOT to take them seriously. That means that I STILL have to catch up to the Slits as a musical entity.

lacey mosely has a really unique voice (and an awesome scream!). and theyre really different to all the other popular female-fronted rock bands out now like evanescence or paramore (although theyre pretty cool too!).

Well, I haven't bothered with anything by them other than Cut but I'd definitely recommend checking them out. And still don't take them seriously... they're one of the more fun bands of that time period/genre.
I thought I'd add Made Out of Babies' and Battle of Mice's Julie Christmas. Something about her voice manages to draw me in.. one of the only female vocalists in the experimental metal/post-rock scene who manages to add to the music rather than detracting from it.
Hegira is an up and coming female fronted rock band I dug up from the underground a few months ago on youtube that you might want to check out if you like bands such as Paramore,Fly leaf,Lacuna Coil Evanescense. I know what you mean about the seemingly short list of female fronted rock bands. It's really disturbing. Where's the poetry & politicism we once felt with the Grunge era and the new female dirtied up style that came forth from that time. The Cranberries,Bjork,ToriAmos,Hole,10,000 Maniacs,Alanis Morrissette,Garbage. Where's that fire? Girls were pissed and were'nt going to be anybodies fool. Now with such focus on that fake face, fake boob, fake life image, maybe the big boys in the music industry have lost a little respect as well due to how chicks behave on all these reality shows, girls gone wild, etc it makes us look like a bunch of brainless pigs. Women, stop the superficial bullshit. It's gross. Act like a lady with just a little bit of class because you're ruinin' it for the rest of us. The desperate housewives of orange county and newyork or whatever, are so ungracious, and materialistic to the degree that they don't at some point understand that one of their watches or rings could pay to feed an entire village for a year! Maybe more. I'll bet if you were to put a starving baby in their arms while they're dining at their favorite very upscale restaurant, they would realize how ridiculous they lookn in life. Same for anyone else spending an unnecessary amount of money on something that just keeps time or a handbag that just carries things,a pair of shoes that just cover your feet,a car that just gets you around. Please,to all of those people who can afford lavish things, consider a starving child. Is it me? or do other people feel this way? After all, what is going on in society, directly affects creativity and the arts, especially music. Question: Has music itself become somewhat superficial becuase of society?
The Chalets (out of Dublin. I love them- 2 female lead singers!) Dresden Dolls anyone? Liz Phair Veruca Salt Nehedar (out of New York, Love them too) The Noisettes! tried to name ones that had been left out.
Skin from Skunk Anansie is amazing. There is a new band which is female fronted called Thinking For Tuesday. Saw them support the Ex-Reef lot at the weekend in Southampton and they had a great live show.
