Sleater-Kinney. I know, they broke up, but really, there's no competition.

the best female rock band in my opinion. it's amazing how evolved their sound has become. you can hear the progression so well through their albums. i still can't believe they broke up. i feel so lucky to have been able to finally see them last year (i would've been soooo pissed).

if you're interested in S-K, give Cadallaca a try (one-time side project of Corin Tucker's)

May they always be remembered.

In a profile of the band, The New Yorker wrote, "It's insulting to call Sleater-Kinney the best female rock band in the world when they're one of the best rock bands, period."

LOVE the Duke Spirit!

What about the Kills?

On the lines of Sleater-Kinney / Cadallaca - you should also check out Heavens to Betsy & Excuse 17 both early SK projects.

Just heard a song by a band called The Gossip called standing in the way of control. It's pretty cool. You should check it out.

In no particular order:

Long Blondes (repped em hard on these forums)
Blonde Redhead
Jefferson Airplane
Arcade Fire (not female fronted, but... I heart "In the Backseat" and "Haiti")
CSS

That's all my inebriated mind can come up with...

Loooove the Gossip! She's got a really powerful soulful voice that reminds me a bit of a Janis Joplin. Glad to see that they're finally starting to get recognition. And i've heard that their live shows are amazing, especially the singer!

Jefferson Airplane
Heart- Ann and Nancy Wilson definitely know how to rock. One or the other of them also put down some backing vocals for Layne Staley on AIC's 'Sap'.
Can't say Evanescence is the greatest band around, but they do have a powerful sound and Amy Lee's voice is amazing.
Sleater-Kinney was around the Seattle scene at the same time as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, et al and never got the local press that those guys did.
Anyone heard of Holly McNarland?

Sonic Youth is my favorite female fronted rock band. Yes, Kim Gordon sings less than half the songs, but if you've seen them live, there's no question who fronts the band.
