I have heard Japan but only their final album, "Tin Drum." Their earlier stuff is allegedly more loud and glam than "Tin Drum." I remembered liking it in 1981 when I bought an import vinyl copy of it, but I hadn't heard it for years until a friend came over a few months back and flipped it on my turntable. He couldn't remember it, and I told him it sure sounds like Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. When the album ended, my friend said, "That was the problem...it sounds EXACTLY like Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music." I won't go that far. "Tin Drum" sounds more Middle- and Far-Eastern than Roxy ever did. I'm probably not the best person to discuss this, since, at least up to 1977, Roxy Music was one of my two favorite bands of the 70s. Plus I don't really know what you heard. I'm only familiar with "Tin Drum", but if you like any of that, make sure you check out Roxy Music's "Stranded", "Country Life" and "Siren." (That's a pretty holy trinity right there.)

Yes, for sure "Tin drum" is thier most consistent album, however for a beginner I would recommend "Excorcising ghosts", a great collection of thier less "Glam" tracks. I also recommend David Sylvians solo work, in particular "Gone to earth".
