I would mention something about the irrelevance of this topic, but I need to try to make an effort to keep my postings positive...
Zeppelin was way better musically and in the broad sense of things. None of their band members have slipped into discrace like Ozzy has either. Neither band had anyone who could write halfway decent lyrics, nor could they avoid the temptation to show off their technical musical skills. Due to reasons like that, I haven't listened to either one in several years...
I would agree that Plant certainly wasn't a very capable lyricist, but Sabbath's lyrics had their interesting moments (War Pigs is a fine example)
As for the poll, this was a tough one for me as I love both bands. Led Zeppelin just about won my vote though, mainly due to the awesomeness of Page, Jones and Bonham.

Zeppelin puts Sabbath to shame in every way possible. Sabbath had some groundbreaking material in the form of a few popular hit songs, but they came no where close to matching Zep's monolithic influence on rock, metal and music in general.
There has never been a band as talented and divinely assembled as Zepellin and there never will be again. End of story.
This argument could probably go on into infinity, but I would have to say Zeppelin. First things first, Zep had a short and impossibly creative career (68-80). Sabbath was with Ozzy for rougly the same time period, but they coninued on with Dio, and then Hughes, and sullied their career. As Neil Young says,"It's better to burn out, than to fade away." and I agree.
Secondly, Zeppelin made more heavy rock, than heavy metal. I do think that Sabbath was the groundbreaking metal band, courtesy of Tony Iommi's playing.
I hope this made sense, I had to answer four phone calls during this post.

I can tell that Zeppelin are your favourite band, but that doesn't mean they have to better than everyone.
I would disagree about them being the most talented band ever. That statement can never be proved, just always disputed.
But both Zeppelin and Sabbath were highly influentail for metal music, I guess Deep Purple and Ritchie Blackmore need a mention here too for creatig the heavy metal genre. Tony Ioomi was the one who really pioneered metal guitaring whereas Page was more hard rock/blues orientated.
this is a hard choice for me but i will have to say that led zeppelin is better and more well known around the world.'whole lotta love' is still one of my all time fave songs
this really isnt even a question. led zeppelin invented hard rock in the way we know it today, and their influence stretches from the immediate aftermath of their first album to the present day. robert plant compares better than favorably against ozzy, both as a lyricist and vocalist.
jimmy page can be argued as the best rock guitar player in history, by virtue of eclecticism in style, creativity in use of his instrument, as well as sheer technical prowess. for all his high points, the same cannot be said of tony iommi.
but the rhythm section is where zeppelin really puts sabbath to shame. john paul jones has seldom seen his match when it comes to blending technically challenging lines with the smooth grounding necessary from a bass in a four-piece band.
that, and add that john bonham is the greatest drummer the world has ever seen.

I love Sabbath for their eerieness, and other wordliness.
I love Zep for their swing and sexuality and grandeur.

both bands had there niche and altho they sounded heavy, I thing LZ was a better rock band and BS rather made way with the metal stuff. No way you would ever think that BS would give us something such as Stairway to Heaven and they never did. THey just did not have it in them I agree about Deep Purple. THey had musical balls for sure.
I voted for Sabbath, but with a gigantic caveat: Osbourne-era only. There are some songs by Zep that I never, ever want to hear again, I can't say that about those early Black Sabbath records. Of course, it's not Zep's fault that I listened to them every single day from 8th-11th grade

Sabbath made some awesome music, but Ozzy remains a talentless bum who didn't even write his own lyrics. Bill Ward deserves an award for doing Ozzy's homework - great drummer. And before anyone starts, I LOVE the first 4 albums, but they tarnished their own image and the inventors of heavy metal STILL dumb themselves down WAY too much. There are 2 albums with Ronnie James Dio that are pure class, but Sharon will make sure they never see the light of day.
Unfortunately, Zeppelin are always going to win simply by having a perfect back catalogue (A tragedy because Sabbath had a better guitar sound). Zeppelin were a flawless band with 4 musical entities who could do no wrong - John Paul Jones went on to produce records by the Mission and the Butthole Surfers - integrity in force.

I'm going to say Led Zeppelin. The band has proven to be a heavy influence over all kinds of rock artists. Black Sabbath seems to just influence artists within the death metal/black metal category. However, I love them both. It's just that Zeppelin was way more original and Sabbath's Dio days hurt them alot (OZZY FOREVER!!!!! )

Oh. Forgot about them. I guess you're right, but I was just trying to say that, overall, Led Zeppelin has been a bigger influence in rock music as a whole... pretty much every sub-genre within rock music and much of music in general has been inspired by Led Zeppelin, but both bands are heavily influential... and besides VH1's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock countdown in 2000 where Zep was 1 and Sabbath was 2, why do people keep comparing the two? They're both amazing, heavily influential rock bands.
