haha, does everyone hate the darkness because of the band's penchant for costumes? i actually really like some of their other songs :P lyrically speaking, hawkins does a good job with "love is only a feeling" and "holding my own" and even lead single "i believe in a thing called love." As for current rock, isn't U2 considered the biggest band right now? they've been around for such a long time, and while their new material may not be as experimental as favs achtung baby or war, i feel that they are pretty consistently good.

i feel like the music scene is pretty scattered right now, and while a lot of indie bands have been signing on to major labels and debut pretty well on the billboard charts, they quickly fall, and the next new "fashionable indie" band as supported by The OC or whatever comes on and takes over its spot.

Hah. Personally, I lurve the Darkness - play "Permission To Land" regularly and can't wait for "One Way Ticket..." to come out. However, I recognise that other people have their opinions as well, therefore I shall abstain from stabbing people in the face. Smiler

It's a good thing you don't actually exist then.

Bots, I'm assuming. Either that or you're a member of their street team sent to hype them up in forums and chat rooms.

If you're looking for an awesome new "old school" rock band that isn't derivative but instead use their influences to make original rock music look into the Australian band Wolfmother. I've seen them live twice (and will see them again at the Big Day Out) and they simply rock. They harken back to the days of Led Zep and Sabbath and although they brazenly wear their influences on their sleeves are still totally innovative.

This is a good one. I've listened to this Wolfmother album, and I certainly agree. They make many difficult artistic choices. For example, "Should I sing like Ozzy or Plant on this song?" "Would a snare kick right here make me sound more or less like Bonham?" "Do you think that a flute bridge makes this song sound like Jethro Tull?" It's all very inventive.

I don't know much about Australian rock beyond the aforementioned Jet (ripped above for their derivative nature) and Wolfmother. I can only take this post to be the height of irony, since it's practically a cut-and-paste from Neumu's Wolfmother review. Bravo!

If you want new classic psych/hard-rock that's not a ripoff for real, try Dungen. Or do yourself a favor and listen to II.

I heard another Darkness track in a convenience store today. This is why I don't listen to radio.

I hate bands like the Darkness. the problem with hipster irony is it has nothing to replace its target object with. bands like that usually start to believe their own hype-buzz-marketing and fuck up their next album anyway...

I don't think The Darkness have anything to do with hipster irony. As evidenced by the amount of people on MC who love the hip indie bands of the moment, but really hate The Darkness! Personally, I don't get it, they are super fun, and there is no current band that sounds even remotely like them. Plus, any band that scraps an entire album due to their own dissatisfaction with the quality is not relying on hype-buzz marketing. The Darkness did not become succesful through marketing, they did it by filling a niche that needed to be filled, and doing it well. So, if you don't enjoy them, it's likely that you have no soft spot for 80's hair metal, and that's fine, but it's not because the band lacks talent, skill, or integrity.

I think they are one case of a band that you know critics will always hate because they don't take themselves totally seriously, nor are they ironic (except in the way that they're poking fun at both themselves and hair metal), and they're ripping off a style of music that, let's face it, was awful, but we all have a soft spot for.

After the scene in their video from the first album where they vanquish the weird monster and a hole opens in the ceiling and the guitar drops into the singer's hands and he launches into a huge guitar-masturbation solo, I will never be able to dislike these guys. That was literally the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.

So? Get the original albums they're ripping off, then. Why support a bunch of brainless, annoying hacks when Queen and Quiet Riot is still freely available for purchace and the same stores?

Yeah, that's what they teach you in critic school: music must only be made by people who take themselves seriously. Actually, I hate them because their sound is annoying, derivative, and immature. Their fame is stolen and their jokes are as funny as Mad Magazine is now. I don't care what they think of themselves. They just blow ass. Doesn't Motley Crue have a live album coming out?
Though, now that you bring it up, every interview I've read with Justin Hawkins has him taking himself very seriously. He's always pissed that people think his joke band is a joke band. Nobody loves The Darkness more than him.

I have albums from those bands too! Personally I think The Darkness are more talented than Quiet Riot anyway, and brainless and annoying is strictly your opinion. I don't think Roy Thomas Baker would've produced them if they were hacks! On top of that, Queen were unloved by critics when they were current too!

Roy Thomas Baker would produce anyone. Half his client roster is dead now.

Annoying? Yes. Brainless? No. They're a high school masturbation band. Except for finely tuned marketting skills, everyone in and around The Darkness is dumb as f*ck. At least Quiet Riot accepted the fact they were dumb and just went with it, instead of pretending to be a real rock band.

Being dumb doesn't mean you can't be a real rock band. Many of the greatest rock bands of all time are "dumb" then according to your definition. And annoyance is always a personal thing, just because I find house music to be horribly annoying, headache inducing obnoxiousness, it doesn't mean that the definition of house music is annoying, it's just my opinion and reaction.

Any band member should love their band more than other people who are not involved in the group, otherwise what the hell are you doing in the band?

No, it means you can be a very successful commercial rock band. Hooray for the mainstream!

umm...yeah. of course they don't compare to the classic 80s and 90s bands, but theyre definitely a lot closer than most bands these days. I'd say theyre more like zeppelin than the ones you named, especially this one song on their new album i forgot the name of

The thing you forget is that the reason why all of those bands where so good is that they were creating something new and different from what had been done(they were really creating rock) they were setting the basis of rock, the rock we all know, how can bands of this time live up to the creatures and starters of rock if its all been done. I think that the darkness might not be ass good as classics like guns n roses or Black Sabbath but im sure they asspire to be like them and i dont want clones of bands anyway theres far too much of that going on (cause the reason why they were so good was that they were the first of their kind) but the darkness are as close as it gets, rock was different in the time of all those bands anyway ,time goes by and so does music! and you have to live with it unless your gonna get off ur ass and form a band thats of that quality then stop ripping other ones apart, theyv achieved nore than you!I think that the darkness have their own unique souns and they arnt out to be like bands of the past, their out to start something new and to be remebered. Have an open mind cause all this time ur complaining in years to come kids might be aying when are all the great rock bands like the darkness going to emerge! stop living in the past
