They aren't.

The Darkness?!?! YUCK! Are they serious?

I'm with the person who mentioned Queens of the Stoneage. Now THAT'S a great band! If you're into stoner rock and cool guitar, I highly recommend them.

What about the band JET? Nobody has mentioned them yet -- they seem to be a promising band. I find myself playing their CD a lot. There's something for everyone on that CD.

Jet deserve to be shot. I saw them once at the Empire in Annandale before they got big and they were alright because I was really drunk, but after I had hearing songs like "Now Look What Youve Gone and Done" and "Rollover DJ" over and over again I have come to hate them.

No amount of "yeah", "ow" or "wows" can make up for poor songwriting ability.

Jet rip off to many other bands in an obvious way, like iggy pop on 'are you gonna be my girl'. But their album is fairly enjoyable, if completely unoriginal.

The perfect, absolute description of Jet comes from the Pitchfork review of their debut album, which can be found at http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/j/jet/get-born.shtml

The Darkness are rubbish.

Why's everyone leaving The Darkness in such a bad light. They arent that bad--I like them actually. Metal, they are not; but they ARE different, and to me different is GOOD. For some great indie stuff metal or non check out

The Flaming Lips
Modest Mouse
The Shins (my current fave)
New Pornographers
Say Hi to Your Mom
The Hives
The Vines
Elliot Smith isnt bad

Theyre all really good, but seeing that I'm no metal fan i cant help much

The Darkness are okay if you don't mind the heavy metal tongue-in-cheek thing. Someone had to do it eventually. For a truly awesome rock album, check out Tomahawk's Mit Gas!

LOL, that was hilarious:
"'Dude, I don't understand. We sound like everyone's favorite old rock bands, we have insipid lyrics, we say 'Come On!' and 'Oh Yeah!' every five seconds, we have no discernable identity, and we're from Australia. What could people possibly dislike about us?'"

Awww shucks, I am supposed to feel like a big loser now because I suggested that the band JET was cool. Oh well, I guess I'm a total sucker, but still feel like they are good. Yeah, the record has more than a few silly lines and "oh yeahs," but I still enjoy it. It's fun.

Don't feel like a loser ... you are fully entitled to like any band you wish. Different people have different tastes in music and if everyone liked all of the same bands and hated all of the same bands, it would be really boring ... and there would be no point to this forum.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who would agree with you, they're just unfortunately not here to get your back.

And maybe some of the people reading this thread WOULD like Jet, so it's still a valuable suggestion since people who are unfamiliar with the band may check it out and find something new that they like.

Sorry for getting a bit agressive there. It was bad because you need people to be open about expressing themselves on forums or it doesnt really work. I just get a bit worked up about Jet because they are so big here and everyone I know gets their panties in a bunch about them and thinks they are the best thing since contraception.

No worries, that's exactly what this forum is about ... people feeling free to express themselves, whether it's to show their like or dislike for something. Which is exactly why no one said boo to what you said, it's free speech, you are allowed to say it.

But I did want to give some support to the woman who expressed her liking of the band, because I know how it feels to talk about something you like and then have it bagged on.

But I also know you didn't mean anything personal, you were just ragging on a band you don't like. That's okay as long as it doesn't get personal.

Forums suck balls if there are a bunch of forum nazis who go around flaming everyone who has an opinion on anything. Like the badassmofo.com forums. I posted a topic there once asking for a link to a flash cartoon and nothing else and got called a fag about 5 times in as many posts.

Of course, it's hard to say what you were expecting from a site that goes by the domain name badassmofo.com... Razzer

You have to wonder about Jet. If they had emerged 6 or so years ago, before the Hives, White Stripes etc popularized retro-garage, I wonder whether they would be so reviled among the cognoscenti who actually recognize the influences being plundered.

Are they a victim of johnny-come-lately-itis? Are we all tired of the retro thing?

OR do they just suck?

I'm geniunely asking here; the only Jet song I've heard is the lead single...

IMO their songs sound really generic and have absolutely no personality. They're totally geared towards commercial radio.

For my money, the rokkinist album in a while is Penance Soiree by The Icarus Line.

Also, does anybody remember Quicksand? I listened to Slip while I was mowing the grass today... it was a good time.

The Darkness are little more than a parody of their favourite bands. They tried to take a lil bit of Thin Lizzy's sound, except they completely fucked that up, and now sound neither melodic or catchy.

The Mars Volta are the future of rock I reckon. Prog rock, but rock all the same. 'De-Loused in the comatorium' is an album up to the same standards as TooL's Aenima.

If I want sexist RAWK squelched out by a tool in leotards, I'll go back to the eighties. Not all music has to be serious but it wouldn't hurt it to be a little intelligent and not totally based on image and dick jokes. Bill Hicks has the dick joke market cornered.

It'll be tough to get another big rock band to the popularity level of the 80s rock bands. And even harder to make it so that rock band is..good.

Mars Volta debuted their last album at #3 on the billboard 200 chart. I suppose they have a shot. They might even be good once they learn that structure is their *friend*.

Green Day and U2 are both pretty huge right now -- if they count. (If you're talking about hard rock, or the type of music they play on hard rock/metal stations, that's different.) If Green Day manages to make another album that appeals to disillusioned liberal gen-y-ers, they're in.

There aren't many bands that are good, are hard rock, AND are of the type of music that ever gets played on the radio.
