The acoustic rockabilly freakout on the Vibrators' "24 Hour People" or maybe those two little things in "Paranoid Android"?

Buck Dharma - Veteran of the Psychic Wars (Blue Oyster Cult - Extraterrestrial live) is the reference for me. However it's difficult to stick to one...

I also love:

Zoot Horn Rollo - Long Neck Bottles (Captain Beefheart)
David Gilmour - Dogs (Pink Floyd)
Bill Nelson - Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus (Be-bop Deluxe)
Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun (live)
John McLaughlin - Vital Transformation (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay

Lots of Leo Kottke, Hound Dog Taylor, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins...

David Gilmour's got a pretty impressive resume as far as guitar solos. I've always liked "Comfortably Numb" and "Time".

Some newer stuff to be considered:
Mike McCready's solo at the end of Pearl Jam's "Alive".

Also The Edge's solo on U2's "The Fly".

This is definitely in my top 10.

This is a hard question, by the way. This is something I think about maybe too much. My favorites change all of the time, but a few are always near the top. I guess, for now, I'll go with Richard Lloyd's solo on Matthew Sweet's "Sick of Myself."

As guitar solos go, I love:
The Eagles' Hotel California (the opening)
Led Zeplin Stairway to Heaven
Eric Clapton on Crossroads
I also love Clapton's work on George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Almost everything Jimmy Hendrix played!

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

Plug In Baby... never would have thought of that on my own, but really cool guitar work in that song.

For me, it's the weird little 30 second solo-things in Paranoid Android.

Hard question.

I'd say, Jimmy Paige's solo on "Since i've been loving you" is hands down the best guitar solo I've ever heard.

Also his stuff on, "heartbreaker" "white summer/black mountainside", "stairway".

Solo on comfortably numb.

Hammet's solo on "master of puppets" omg! And really, anything Hammett did on the first 3 Metallica albums.

Slash's solo on "sweet child o mine" it's and ole favorite.

Everyone has mentioned great solos. As far as guitar solos having an impact on the momentum of a song, I've always appreciated the energy Brian May's solo has at the end of "We Will Rock You". It's a great ending for that song.

Hey hudson: yes, yes, yes, and yes. You've captured 4 of rock's all-time greatest guitarists right there, and also pointed out some of their best solos. "Since I've been lovin you" is an amazing song, and the solo is one of my favourites (along with Stairway and Babe, I'm gonna leave you)
Kirk Hammet--where would rock be without this true thrasher? "Master of Puppets" is one of the best metal songs ever, and has a wicked solo. So does "Ride the Lightning" and "One."
And finally, Slash. An incredible guitarist, my personal favourite solo probably being "sweet child o' mine" or "don't cry." But who has the best solo of all time? David Gilmour. His work is transcendent, especially on the masterpiece "Comftorably Numb." He also manages to make "Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2" not just another brick in the wall with a challenging solo full of crazy staccatos.. in any case, the classiest, craziest, and in comftorably numb, the most transcendent rock guitarist ever.

Marc Ribot on Tom Waits' Cold Water or Down In The Hole. I agree with the earlier post that The Edge's solo on The Fly is fantastic aswell.
If Blixa Bargeld did solos they'd probably be my favourite, but he doesn't bother... Roll Eyes
All part of his aesthetic don't you know...
