I'm not really sure why or what I'm posting. I always assumed most people loved all the Beatles songs. I mean, whether I'm a kid or a 50-year-old, and I still sing along to every flippin' song (and enjoy watching/hearing my wife and my 15-year-old daughter do it too), I guess it kinda makes me insulated from the "Real World". Or maybe, I'm not insulated, but the people who "don't get" certain Beatles' work are insulated or just-plain prejudiced (not that I'm not the reverse Cool)

First off: I don't expect everybody to love the Beatles; not back in the '60s or today. My pop (born in 1910) didn't like 'em; at least at first, but eventually he got "worn down". He heard the wonderful lyrics, the complicated music, and the throwback to the good ol' days. (My pop played the cornet professionally in the late '20s and '30s. He did that, along with hustling pool, to support himself and his family during the Depression.) My mom (born in 1913), on the other hand, liked them right away. She was attracted to the romanticism, the harmonies, the heartfeltness of the Beatles. To give you an idea of my mom: when she was 67, she told me that the Undertones' heavily-influenced-by-the-Beatles song, "Wednesday Week" was "the prettiest song" she'd ever heard!! This from someone whose favorite singers were the Ink Spots and Nat King Cole!

I know that some people like to attack certain songs as being "cutesy", "kid's music", "wimpy", "precious", "overtly artistic", or many other things. I have never heard a Beatles song which was sub-par, unlike many of my dyed-in-the-wool friend-fans. I enjoy "Revolution 9", and my posts to the contrary, I've never dropped acid. Some of the McCartney songs which are easily attacked are so musically-thrilling and so lyrically-satirical that to attack them seems to be something only a humorless Scrooge would do.

Ringo's and George's songs also seem to make people protest. I still don't get it! Ringo is really good at handling country-tinged songs, such as the cover of "Act Naturally" and the wonderful "Don't Pass Me By". I realize that some believe otherwise, but the original version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" IS the best version. Also, George was one of the least-egotistical, yet most-innovative, lead guitarists in the history of rock, and his songs were always very heartfelt and distinctive. "If I Needed Someone", "Taxman", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", etc. contribute a lot. In fact, George often seems to be the Beatle who chastises the general public for "only sleeping", needing to wake up.

The thing is the Beatles did so much and so fast that it's hard to grasp what they did. They churned out over 200 songs in about eight years. They covered the entire history of music, from classical, music-hall, jazz, show tunes and blues to psychedelia, country, hard/acid rock, avant-garde, folk, prog, sing-alongs, heavy metal, twee (maybe that's what some are pissed about; I never thought of it before, but maybe they did "invent twee".)

Whatever, the Beatles rule. Keep listening to them because if you don't get them, you will. If you're afraid of 'em, that's silly. If you're better than them, that's just plain wrong.

"All You Need Is Love."

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

I wouldn't expect everyone to love every Beatles tune, but they covered so much musical territory (as you said, mark) that everyone should be able to find a handful of Beatles tracks they love. They're definitely not a band you can write off after hearing one song, or even one album.

I've searched this topic and nobody's mentioned "There's a Place", one of my all-time faves. And I know this song isn't theirs but their cover of "Money" is the benchmark for this song.

Of the two above songs, Greil Marcus said that they "kept every promise that rock 'n' roll ever made."

'nuff said

Hey, did anyone here have one of those plastic Beatles wigs?

As a fan it's tough to choose between so many great albums/songs. However, I have noticed that the only Beatles album that I usually feel like playing is "Abbey Road". Also "Let it Be" is the Beatles song I listen to most.

No, but I recently had a Beatles style mop top. Took the best part of a year to grow it.

As for my favourite Beatles stuff:
Album - Rubber Soul
Songs - Taxman, Drive My Car, Elenor Rigby, Run for Your Life, Helter Skelter, Day Tripper and Help!

I think my favorite album has to be Abbey Road...songs are a bit tougher, a few that come to mind immediately:

Dear Prudence
Here Comes The Sun
Blackbird
Fixing A Hole

Not all those who wander are lost.

it is nearly impossible to choose my favorite beatles song...they are all wonderful, not to say they never had missteps. i will say, however, that my favorite album is magical mystery tour...simply because it contains (in my opinion) their most breathtaking phsychedelic songs...(see "i am the walrus," "blue jay way", "magical mystery tour")

and one of my personal favorites, that i would almost say is my number one beatles song...."your mother should know". brilliant album, just brilliant.

Favorite Beatles song has to be "A Day In The Life". "I'd love to turn you oooooon." Ugh, achingly beautiful. By turn, favorite album has to be Sgt. Pepper because...IT'S THE ONLY ONE I'VE HEARD! I HATE ME!

/endemo

I'm getting around to it, I swear!
