You can't find everything you like in a year, in the same year. Sometimes it takes a few months to discover something that was released in just the past year. It is different than finding something you like 10-20 years ago and adding to your collection. Sometimes your recent findings cause you to wonder why/how it passed you by. It always happens.

So, to keep some 2004 releases alive, post, if you want, some CD's you purchased from say, March to the present that were released from 2004. It may be because you had no cash at the time, or you just heard something that caught your ear for the first time....

Here are 2004 releases I have bought this year:

1. Madeleine Peyroux - careless love
Just heard 'dance me to the end of love' a month ago, and went hunting. Not bad, like her vocals.

2. The Killers - Hot Fuss
Yeah. What can I say? Bought it for the girlfriend, and burned it. Finally, I guess. Some good tunes.

3. Sasha - Involver (2Xcd)
Took me some time to find, and enjoy the second disc of older remixes.

4. RJD2 -Since we Last Spoke
Okay, I bought in January, but was one CD I wish I picked up when released to make my official year end list. So, on the bubble.

I don't know if it counts, but Feist's Let It Die is a stellar 2004 import that was released Stateside in April. Many thanks to KLT for recommending it.

I bought Nellie McKay's Get Away From Me early this year. Boguht Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose in April after months of thinking about it. I bought Of Montreal's Satanic Panic In The Attic a few weeks before The Sunlandic Twins was released.

yeah I heard that as well. Is the Go! Team going to have to get rights to all the US samples he uses? All the hip-hop acts have to get permission to sample if its used on a record for sale.

I also heard the album was going to change because of all the sampling being used.

Hopefully the new songs have more of Ninja on it. Chick can rap.

I purchased:
Green Day's "American Idiot"
Los Lonely Boys "Los Lonely Boys" (I think 2004??)
Elton John's "Peachtree Road"
Brian Wilson's "Smile"
Mick Jagger's soundtrack for movie "Alphie"

Now a middle-aged man, I have not lost my love of all forms of music. My collection runs the gamut from Dylan and the Stones to Green Day and Beck. Someone has to see if the old guys remain creative and relevant! Personally,"American Idiot" is not only the best album of 2004 but trumps anything released in 05. It is the best rock album I have purchased in years, and certainly the first album since Sgt. Pepper to legitimately be called a "concept album." Its ability to challenge our thinking about social issues, to express the suppressed anger of many, and to pose thoughtful questions through the use of simple power chords and snarling, vocals will empower this album to remain relevant for years.
The Los Lonely Boys are Santanna with a singing voice. Green Day's vocals sound like a band that loves tequila; The Los Lonely Boys sound like twenty year old scotch with some kick to it.
Either rock/pop lovers seem to despise Elton John or adore him. For me, he must be judged by each individual album. Peachtree Road is his best to me. There is a beautiful sense of "grace" in this album. When the Stones try to sound and act like they are still in their twenties they can often come across as a ballet dancer whose movements are "out of sync" with the music. Elton John embraces age, and uses beautiful images of the old south to express his new-found comfort. For Baby Boomers who have chosen to "act our age", this album is our much needed permission to do so, and the reminder that it reallly doesn't hurt.
The albums "Smile" and the "Alphie" soundtrack were my embarassing purchases. Though Wilson's long awaited album appears to the darling of the critics, it is the most boring, disappointing album I've purchased in years. I purchased "Alphie" to see if Jagger could write soundtracks with the skill of his peers like McCartney. He can't. Jagger could become relevant again if he would prance to the microphone and sing lyrics that explain why in his 60s he still "can't get any satisfaction."

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

I think that the Arcade Fire's Funeral is it.

I had avoided Iron & Wine for no better reason than it was labeled as folk. What a huge mistake. I'm so glad I picked up "Our Endless Numbered Days." I think its better than almost everything I've "obtained" this year. Just a fantastic, amazing album. I later got "The Creek Drank the Cradle" and while I think it's great also, I prefer the cleaned up production a little more on OEND. If you haven't given this a chance yet, go download "Cinder and Smoke" and you'll be hooked.

I just got to Feist in the last few days, after she played a great opening set for Broken Social Scene at a club nearby. I'm getting a lot of mileage out of Let It Die.

I burned "Thunder, Lightning, Strike" from my friend who owned it. The same thing goes for "Funeral", from a friend who got the album for his birthday from his dad. Confused Yea, interesting dad.

And I bought "Set Yourself on Fire" a few months ago because the artwork was cool, and I love the whole Arts&Crafts label.
