Although I think it's safe to say that you're getting older than the rest of us.

Regarding U2: "Beautiful Day" is a pretty good song, worthy of a place among the top 100 songs so far this millenium, but I don't really like the band in general. It has nothing (or at least very little) to do with being hip.

Touche, Biggles. I can come off as a crotchety old man, I guess. Some friends and I have been talking about starting up a 'zine or website (or both)...maybe I'll call my column "Get Off My Lawn!!!"
I've been a U2 fan forever. They were once considered cool (although they were never an underground secret, seeing that their first album was on Island), a long time ago, but I think they turned a corner when they became as well known for hobnobbing with politicians as they were for their music. Or maybe it was because of the excesses of some of their tours. I think they've put out consistently good records over their career...I thought they were a great choice for election in the R&R Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.

Neither "Theologians" nor "I'm The Man Who Loves You" were released as singles, and thus they would be ineligible for a list of best singles. If it were a best songs list, one could expect to see "Idioteque" in Pitchfork's top 25, for instance.
pE, I don't have any problem with you criticizing the choices that Pitchfork makes; I'm sick of hearing you (and, fair enough, a spate of other people on this board) claim that every decision that Pitchfork makes is the dictat of some sort of warped sense of "we rule cool" that they have. Every time Pitchfork makes a judgment call that could be perceived as falling in line with some sort of "indie" perception, you (and others) scoff, claiming that clearly they can't possibly like the music, they're just trying to be indie-cool. Then, when they make judgment calls that fall out of line with "indie" perception (Kylie Minogue, for instance), you (and others) scoff, claiming that clearly they can't possibly like the music, they're just trying to be pretentiously meta-cool by out-cooling the previous cool (that you were accusing them of not two forum posts earlier).
And then- and you didn't do this, pE, but some other people did on this forum and elsewhere- someone praises Stylus's list. It was the same freaking list!
See how silly it seems? It's not like Pitchfork is my sacred cow; in fact, I've disagreed with a lot of the major judgment calls they've made in their reviews so far this year (Trail of Dead, Magnolia Electric Co., Low, Mu, Hood). But it gets irksome after a while to see that, again and again, it gets badmouthed for "trying to be the coolest" to the point where the backlash becomes "cool" in and of itself. Which is dumb, because it's a music review website and it is not cool.
EDIT: Misspelled "possibly."

I wasn't going for singles...I was following the title of the thread which was best SONGS of 00-04.
I'm glad you noted that others are guilty of the same thing you initially accused only me of doing regarding Those Who Shall Not Be Named.
I'm not going to reply because I am following Mark's advice and going with the moritorium. At this point, I really don't care. I'll keep my criticisms of WHY I think the Unnamed does what they do to myself. If I disagree with them, I'll focus on my own reasons why I disagree. When you post a list of Best Albums or Singles 2000-2004, you open the door to criticism.

I think everybody pays attention to the site no matter what they say.If they like it or not that is another story.
I personally like the website...but i treat just like any other webiste with reviews and features. Its just a tool...a tool to help u find music that you may or may not have found on your own.
And i think It succeeds in that regard.
Of course i am speaking of the pitchfork.

I may be clueless here, but I wish they didn't limit themselves to just "singles" in the strict definition of the word. By this I mean that they only rank songs officially released as singles and ignore better album tracks. I think this was more evident in the best of 2004 list which included "Slow Hands" off of Antics. I hope most of us would agree its one of the weaker songs on the album. Perhaps "Evil" will be included in the best of 2005 singles list as it has now been officially released this year.

I like "Souljacker", but I think I'm in the minority on that being my favorite Eels album. A lot of people seem to like "Electro-Shock Blues" & "Daisies of the Galaxy".

Well, my fave eels are now blinking lights and other revelations and with strings: live at town hall, but they might be too big (long) for a first listen.
My daughter has become obsessed with both Andrew Bird and eels, and she spends lots of time at both websites. This is the eels website. Maybe something there will pique your interest.

Hey, Give this thread a read if you havent already... there's quite a lot of rant about pitchfork in there but also some useful opinions. I've got Beautiful Freak & Electro shock blues and love them both, I'm guessing either would make a decent starting point
