I know MetaCritic dates albums by their US release date, but c'mon Dizzie Rascal? You guys included him in 2003 last year, and his album was certainly available at most major music retailers. I'm not going to count it as a 2004 release.
I've yet to hear the Street's latest, I'm sure it's great however, but right now it's a two horse race between Kanye West and Madvillain. I think Kanye's album is a much more "important" album however, simply because I think it's largely going to change the perspective and approach of mainstream hip hop (at least I hope so).
Yeah, 50 Cent is waaaaaaaay better than Dizzie Rascal or Kanye West (Now would be an appropriate time to have one of those very witty emoticons)
Kanye is the anti-Fiddy. Actually funny, intelligent, an amazing beatmaking talent (as opposed to 50 Cent who relies on Em, Dre and others tired synth based club beats), has some legitimate charisma (not this whole "Hey-I-may-talk-like-I'm-half-retarded-but-I-got-shot-nine-times!" routine that 50 seems to love). When it comes to depth, Kanye is the Pacific ocean and 50 is the puddle in your backyard. There's simply no comparison.
The Streets album is hardly rap though, its spoken word... Mike Skinner is a poet who puts his prose to a beat... otherwise he is just the worst rapper on the planet
I go for Dizzee Rascal, truly innovative and exciting new talent... even though it is a 2003 album over here!
madvillainy is ridiculously good. it's going to be damn hard to beat i think, but i've been lead to beleive that sage francis has a new album being released on epitaph later this year. could get interesting.
From the list it is definately Madvillain! Streets I would agree is not really rap but the worst rapper ever!? That title firmly belongs to Bizarre from D12. My pick for best rap release of 2004: Ramm Ell Zee-The Bi-Conicals of the Ramm Ell Zee! Check it out!
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas

Dre tired compared to kanye's amazing talent? surely you jest??
eminem is a shit beatmaker, yes, but while i like kanye, adding some drums to a sped-up vocal sample is hardly better than what dre has been doing for almost 20 years.
*listens to The Chronic*
